Spellman, Mary Lynne August 8, 1947 - March 13, 2026

Mary Lynne Spellman passed away the morning of Friday, March 13.

Mary was born on August 8, 1947 in the Bronx, the first child of Walter and Gertrude McCarthy. She spent most of her childhood on City Island with her little brother Walter, graduated from St. Catherine’s Academy and then went on to get her B.A. and Masters in Education from Mercy College.

Mary spent 37 years as an elementary school teacher and literary specialist at PS 97 in the Bronx, where she dedicated herself to her students and made lifelong friends. After her retirement, and always full of energy, she went on to coach the next generation of teachers as an adjunct professor at her alma mater. She was always active in the community, a member of the Junior League in Bronxville and the President of the School 8 PTA.

Mary met her husband Christopher Spellman at a party in college. They married and built a beautiful family together in Yonkers, NY. Mary and Chris would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this summer.

Mary raised two adoring kids, Chris and Kate, and served as a second mom to just about anyone who needed her. Her kitchen table was legendary, the site of good memories, great advice and plenty of laughs. She was known by all for her genuine kindness and positivity, but also for the quiet strength which carried her through a very tough illness at the end of her life.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Walter McCarthy, and her baby girl, Jenny. She is survived by her husband, Chris, her children Chris Spellman (Barbara), Kate Coletti (Joe), four grandchildren, Tommy, Claire, Ryan and Owen, who brought her endless joy, and her Forever Friends who became family.

She will be missed more than words can say.

Mary was a special friend and I will always be grateful for the years of encouragement and support, and most of all for having her as a friend. She was smart, witty, compassionate and always had a warm, welcoming smile. Many happy times together! I am sad for her family and hope the memories of this lovely woman will be of some comfort as time goes on.
