Joanne Mary Oliver, always a proud New Yorker and dedicated to all things New York, was raised in Ridgewood and Richmond Hill, Queens, surrounded by the love of her mother, Louise and of her father Joseph; proud and loving middle sister to Louise and Gloria. Some of her fondest memories were spending her summers at Grandma Anna’s idyllic house in Maspeth, reveling in the simple pleasures which would be an integral part of her entire life: harvesting tomatoes, attending Mass, going shopping on Fresh Pond Road.
While engaged in her first career as an executive assistant in the banking industry, Joanne met Gary Westhoff Sr. in 1965, and two blissful years later they were married. Joanne and Gary raised their three children Mary Beth, Laura, and Gary Jr. in Glendale, Queens, building the roots of a loving family unit that thrives to this day.
Sadly, Gary Sr. passed away in 1993, but in 1996, while working at Resurrection Ascension School in Rego Park, Queens, Joanne reunited with Henry Humphreys, a gentleman she had known from the banking industry thirty years earlier. They were married in 1997, and Joanne’s family grew to include Henry’s wonderful children and grandchildren.
Married until Henry passed away twenty-three years later, Joanne and Henry travelled the world, exploring Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. As a Dame of Malta, and with a husband who was a Knight of Malta, Joanne’s deep Catholic faith, and dedication to social justice, were reflected in the many charitable works included in these travels, like dedicating a new hospital in Bethlehem, or going on pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Joanne had a fulfilling and relaxing retirement. No greater joy came to Joanne than when she was spending time with her four beloved grandchildren, watching them play at Dutch Wonderland, shopping at Build-a-Bear, or enjoying a casual meal at a great restaurant: her love and support played integral roles into the four young adults they are today.
Joanne is survived by her three children Mary Beth (Robert) Dillworth, Laura (Gerald) O’Neill, and Gary Westhoff; grandchildren Mallory (Daniel), Robbie, Connell, and Aubrey. She is also survived by her stepchildren Maureen (Robert) Heckler, Henry (Pam) Humphreys, William (Sara) Humphreys, and Ellen Humphreys; and her grandchildren with Henry: Ian (Kate), Leo, Kathleen, Jack, Will, Elizabeth, Mackenzie, Aileen, Reilly, and Reagan; and great-granddaughter Winifred.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Little Sisters of the Poor. May she now rest in the loving embrace of our Lord, reunited with those who have gone before her in faith. May perpetual light shine upon her, and may her soul rest in eternal peace.
