De Angelis, Stephen May 21, 1942 - October 9, 2024

Devout and Debonair:
A Russian Scholar, Prolific Author, Global Lecturer, and Lifelong Jesuit

October 9, 2024 — Stephen De Angelis (82) passed away in his sleep, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in Bronxville, New York. He was born May 21, 1942, the son of the late Raymond De Angelis and Saveria (Sally ) De Angelis . He very recently moved from West Palm Beach, Florida, to be near his beloved family, and is survived by his loving sister, Marilyn Boyer, his nephew, Charles Boyer, his niece, Alexandra (Boyer) Peretta, and his great nephews and nieces, Joseph and Katherine Peretta, and Ella, Anthony, and CJ Boyer.

Throughout his life, Stephen wove a rich fabric of the many people he enlightened and educated as a teacher, author, and preserver of history, from his young Jesuit days teaching Greek and Latin at Loyola School, through his post-Doctoral days lecturing around the world.

He was educated by Jesuits at Xavier High School, entered the  Saint Andrew-on-Hudson Jesuit Novitiate in Poughkeepsie, NY  and taught Greek and Latin at the Loyola School. He changed course, and pursued a successful career on Wall Street, and then changed course again, as the fine home furnishings buyer at Lord & Taylor, then Abercrombie & Fitch, but his ultimate passion was Russian history.

When Russian history became his full focus, he moved to Saint Petersburg and earned his doctorate in Russian history from St. Petersburg University. He has written nearly 40 books and scholarly papers and has translated the Russian Imperial family diaries.

He was a member of the House of Scholars in St. Petersburg, served as a Trustee of the Prince George Galitzine Memorial Library, and served on the Hermitage Museum Foundation Advisory Board.

Above all, Stephen was devoted to the Blessed Mother in Heaven, but, also, no one was ever more devoted and loyal to their family and friends on Earth. The family is grateful for all the love and kindness of all Stephen’s friends and colleagues. Rest in Peace, Stephen.
