Acciavatti, John T October 4, 1952 - October 13, 2024

John Thomas Acciavatti, 72, of Yonkers, passed away on Sunday, October 13th, at home surrounded by his family, having lost his battle with Kidney Cancer.

John was born on October 4, 1952 to Thomas Acciavatti and Maria Gauthier. Raised by his father Thomas and stepmother Alice Rose in Eastchester, New York. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers and went on to college initially at WCC. After two years he joined the Navy in ‘72 for active duty and reserve. He served on the USS Fulton AS-11 in New London, Connecticut. After he finished his service he returned to Pace University to finish his Bachelor’s degree and then began a long career in accounting at Carvel, Crimins, and thirty-six years at Yonkers Contracting Company.

He met the love of his life, his wife Nancy, when he was only 18 years old. They have been together ever since and created a life only some can hope for. John, as an only child, wanted a large family, and they did just that. They welcomed six children, three boys and then three girls – Thomas Acciavatti, Christopher Acciavatti, Peter Acciavatti, Patricia Viole, Jennifer Dickson, and MaryAnn Schoenig. They threw six amazing weddings to welcome Sara Gally, Dana Singleton, Meghan Forsberg, Chris Viole, Kevin Dickson, and James Schoenig into the family. Went on to welcome ten grandchildren Zac (9), Madison (7), Skylar (6), Zoe (6), Parker (5), Easton (4), Finn (3), James (2), McKenna (1), and John (1).

He was known to enjoy sports and activities of all kinds – hunting, golfing, fishing, curling, poker, chess, and all sports. Volunteered many hours for Richards youth sports league as both a coach and organization manager. Bar sports were his speciality. His skills in darts, pingpong, pool and shuffleboard were unmatched.

He loved to cook. Whether it was pasta fagioli, Italian wedding soup, hot hotdogs, or a plethora of other dishes. He would spend long hours in the kitchen cooking enough for a large army while watching old favorites on the tv. He never did learn to cook smaller portions as they became empty nesters.

Had a love for old classic movies, some of his favorites being The Crawling Eye, North to Alaska, Crimson Pirates, Thief of Baghdad (1961), Plan 9 From Outer Space, Devil at 4 O’clock, Star Wars, Star Trek, and of course anything by Stephen King.

He enjoyed entertaining, especially playing the piano. A self taught piano player, couldn’t read any sheet of music but he could listen to the tune and begin playing by ear. Everyone loved to sing-a-long, even if they could not follow a tune. He recently was donating time to a local nursing home to play for their community.

John felt so blessed to be a part of the very large and extended Paulus family. He leaves behind beloved sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws Marybeth and Steve Babcock, Joanne Vecchione, Christine and Fritz Mueller, Terese and Gary Ghio, Karin Paulus, Jimmy and JeanAnn Paulus, and Karin Paulus. There are also many nieces and nephews that have filled his home at the holidays with the best memories.

He loved to go for walks and trips with Nancy up to Newport, down to the Jersey Shore, or anywhere new as long as they were together. Most of all he loved when the entire Acciavatti bunch came together and he was surrounded by family.

“Next to me, I like you best.”

Services will be held at Fred H McGrath & Son, Inc in Bronxville, NY on Wednesday, October 16 from 3 -7 pm. A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, NY at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering, Dr. Hakimi’s Research, an organization that supported John in his battle against kidney cancer.

John was a great man; a good neighbor and a member of the Henry S Richard’s youth sports club. Heck of a Wednesday night basketball player at St Eugene’s gym.

Our condolences to all of his family
