Richardson, Jane Ann Dupree Begos December 14, 1931 - October 11, 2024

Jane Ann DuPree Begos Richardson was born in Tennessee in 1930.  Her family eventually moved to Georgia where she graduated from University of Georgia, Athens.  After graduation she joined the US Navy where she achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG and worked in the Pentagon during the Korean War keeping track of high security documents. She met her first husband, Kevin Begos, also a Navy lieutenant, and they married in Virginia.  They soon moved to Marseilles, France where their son Kevin, Jr. was born.  They eventually moved back to the States where Jane studied at Columbia University and achieved a masters degree in French on the GI Bill. Her daughter Cassandra was born in NYC.    After many moves and short stints in Minneapolis and Dallas the family settled in Pound Ridge, NY.  It was here that she published a newsletter on the topic of women’s diaries and began her career in museum events and administration at the John Jay Homestead. After Pound Ridge she and Kevin lived in Frankfurt, Germany and Zurich, Switzerland.

Eventually Jane and Kevin divorced and her second marriage to William Richardson took her to Pennsylvania and Indiana. They enjoyed antique auctions and Bassett hounds, especially her beloved Beau. Jane relocated to Apalachicola, Florida in 2014 after the death of her second husband. She had many happy years in Apalach where she was able to spend time with her son and was warmly welcomed into the community.  She had many wonderful friends, kind and helpful neighbors and was able to live out her later years with joy.  Health reasons brought her back to New York to spend her remaining years with her daughter and where she once again experienced Northeast fall foliage and a spring filled with cherry blossoms.

Jane’s published works include a collection of women’s diaries as well as a research project on the American painter Violet Oakley. Her library of women’s diaries is part of the University of Georgia’s special collections. Jane’s passions included checking the mail, bundling up, Kleenex tissues, recycling, mystery novels, speaking French, fried hush puppies, Rick Steves travel programs, her many personal possessions; both fine antiques and everyday items, happy memories of good friends and family, and wine in the afternoon. She is survived by her son in law Christopher and her daughter Cass.Dupree

Jane was a good friend and neighbor. I happily remember visiting on her front porch and at Cafe con Leche in Apalach and walking Beau through the Chapman Gardens. She enjoyed and valued the company of dogs, cats and people and was rightfully proud of being “the Mayor’s mom” when Kevin served as mayor of our small town. She is lovingly remembered and missed by all her Apalach friends.

What a fascinating, interesting life she led. I didn”t know the breadth of her experiences, though I always found her to be so interesting and interested in all that was happening around her. I always wished my french was better so rhat I could have taken part in the monthly French conversation luncheons. I am so glad I had the opportunity to know her. She will he missed by many.

Our Veterans REVEILLE Group, based in Franklin County Florida, is heartbroken to learn recently of the passing of our friend and trailblazing veteran of our armed forces, Lt JG Jane Ann Dupree Begos Richardson. Jane will always be remembered for holding her own with the boys at our Veterans REVEILLE group meeting and she was never to be outdone telling her war stories about service in the Pentagon and overseas as a young female naval officer. We keep her daughter Cass and the family in your prayers.
