 Leo Aloysius Walsh passed into eternal life on May 20, 2016 in Sparks, NV. Leo was born on February 14, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. He is pre-deceased by his loving wife of 35 years, Ann (Griffin) Walsh and his parents, Leo and Moira (Reilly) Walsh. He is survived by his sister, Moira Modica, and his five daughters, Susan (Christian) Siburn, Elizabeth (Thomas) Munster, Marilyn (John) Dwyer, Jacqueline (Paul) Mottola and Jeanne (William) Carr. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren: Anna, Teresa, James and Lillie Siburn; Matthew and Catherine Munster; Brendan, Clare and Patrick Dwyer; Daniel, William and Michael Mottola; and Sarah and Emily Carr. Leo leaves a wife, Sherri. Leo graduated from from New York Maritime College in 1954, then served in the US Navy for two years in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer escort USS Diachenko. He served in the Naval Reserve until 1976, retiring as Captain. Leo sailed with United Fruit Company as third mate. He began his career in P&I at the Marine Office of America. He later moved on to Frank B. Hall and Alexander & Alexander, where he worked as an average adjuster. While at Frank B. Hall he earned his MBA from New York University. He retired from the American Hull Insurance Syndicate in 1999. Leo served as Chairman of the Association of Average Adjusters of the United States from 1985 to 1986. He earned the respect of his peers for his vast knowledge of marine insurance, general average, and his parties following the Association dinners. Leo and Ann raised their family in Yonkers, NY, where they were active parishioners at St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville. Leo was also an active member of the Armour Villa Taxpayers Association, where he served as treasurer for many years. Leo was passionate about boating, and he and his family spent weekends and vacations cruising the Northeast and the British Virgin Islands. He passed along his appreciation of the serenity of the sea to his daughters. His legacy will be the self-reliance, fearlessness and strength that he instilled in his daughters (a.k.a., his “Men”).Leo loved to travel. When he visited Antarctica in 1997, he claimed the remarkable achievement of having been to all seven continents. Leo moved to Fernley, NV in 2004. He was an active member of St. Robert Bellermine Church, where he was a leader in the capital campaign to build a new Church. He was a member of the auxiliary police in Lyon County. Leo embraced the wide-open space of the desert as it reminded him of the sea. Visiting hours will be Thursday, May 26 at 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm at Fred McGrath and Son Funeral Home, 20 Cedar Street, Bronxville, NY. Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Joseph’s Church, Bronxville, NY on Friday, May 27 at 10:45 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to Catholic Relief Services.
