Blanche Melain Paul

1936-2016

Blanche Melain Paul died following a short but devastating illness on April 25, 2016 in New York City. Blanche was born on October 25, 1936 in Washington, D.C. and spent her early years in Virginia and later in California. She moved to New York City in the late 70s and remained in New York until her death. She was the daughter of Mildred Audrey of Los Angeles, California and John Sibley Paul of Leesburg, Virginia. Blanche is survived by her brother Joseph Barnet Paul (Ginny) of Reston, Virginia.

As a child, Blanche spent many happy days on the family farm in Leesburg, Virginia, where she especially loved riding her pony, Gray Baby. She is the granddaughter of Antoinette and Joseph Audrey of Wisconsin, and her namesake, Blanche Barnett, and Frank Dean Paul of Virginia. She spent her middle years in California where she received a BA in the history of philosophy at UCLA. Blanche set out on an artistic path and became a painter creating a body of work that spans six decades. She received an MFA from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in NYC. Blanche enjoyed a successful career and showed her work in galleries across the USA. She received commissions, honors, and awards over the years and is represented in both public and private collections. Both Yaddo and MacDowell Art Colonies offered her fellowships. Blanche’s beautiful work is best described as abstracted figuration.

Arrangements have been made through Fred H. McGrath Funeral Home in Bronxville, NY. A private interment was held at the St. Paul’s Rock Creek Cemetery, where Blanche was laid to rest beside her mother in the Paul family mausoleum. A gathering of friends will be held over the summer in New York City to celebrate the life of a beloved friend. Memorial donations may be sent to http://nyaa.edu/Blanche.
