Dr. Dominick Salvatore passed away surrounded by those he loved on Tuesday, January 27th. He was a loving husband and father, world renowned lecturer, author, and beloved professor. There is so much to be said about this man of humble beginnings. Through hard work and the love of his family, he attained the pinnacle of academic excellence in the field of economics. Dr. Salvatore was raised in the Abruzzo region of central Italy in the town of Villa Santa Maria by his mother, Maddalena and father, Nicola. He came to America at the age of 15. While working as a waiter, Dr. Salvatore dedicated his intellectual efforts to his education, receiving his Ph.D. in Economics from City University of New York. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Salvatore was the chair of the Economics Department at Fordham University, in addition to being a distinguished professor. He was also an honorary professor at many international institutions, including the Libera Università Mediterranea, University of Praetoria, Shanghai Finance University and Hunan University. He wrote nearly 60 books on economics, which were translated into over 50 languages and used in universities across the globe. Dr. Salvatore was one of the most scholarly figures in the field of international economics. Far from living his life exclusively in academia, he enjoyed the outdoors and was known for his love of camping and fishing. His most treasured titles were husband to Lucia, father to Madeleine, father-in-law to Rich, grandfather to Isabella, brother to Angelo, and uncle to Anthony, Michael, and Julie. Dr. Salvatore will be sorely missed, but his example of integrity, hard work, and the importance of love and devotion will remain.

January 30, 2026 at 12:07 amMay he rest in peace. My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I wish them patience, strength, and resilience during this difficult time.
Beyond building a great Economics department at Fordham, hiring outstanding faculty, and being a renowned instructor and textbook author, Professor Salvatore had an incredibly warm and lighthearted personality. He made us laugh constantly in his classes, helping us forget, even if only for a moment, the challenges of life and the pressures of graduate school. I will always remember him with a smile.
Rest in Peace, Professor Salvatore ❤️

January 30, 2026 at 1:27 pmI remember Prof. Salvatore mostly as a gifted teacher, perhaps the best I have been lucky enough to have. He never worked from notes and was never thrown off balance. He could brilliantly explain complex issues because he understood them so deeply, so completely. All this he did with passion, compassion for his students and a slightly mischievous sense of humor. An exceptional person, an exceptional life.
Wishing peace and comfort to his family. Thank you for sharing him with us.

January 30, 2026 at 11:34 pmDr. Salvatore was instrumental in my being awarded my doctorate from Fordham University. He was instrumental in shaping me to the economist I had become. A prolific author he was writing a book while I was still a student. He asked me to help gather data for a table in that book. I had graduated and I few years later I get a call from him. The book was going to the second edition and he asked if I could update the table. This happened every few years as new editions were published. I may have been working as a professional economist but I was still his student. I was not alone. We are the hundreds of people who are not his former students but his students for life. Not his life but our lives. He will be missed by use. And I feel sorry for those students who will not be touched by him.

January 31, 2026 at 8:35 amThank you Professor Salvatore;
It was a privilege to be a student of your guidance and instruction in economics at Fordham. Your passion and expertise during lectures, coupled with a unique ability to broaden and brighten the minds of your students as well as make them laugh, always kept me looking forward to your instruction. Thank you as well for putting Fordham’s economics department on the map with your leadership in developing the M.A. program – because of it, I was able to achieve my professional goals in NYC.
To Dr. Salvatore’s family – I wish you my heartfelt and deepest condolences; you and so many others have lost a very special person.
Best,
Robert Bruce

January 31, 2026 at 4:40 pmCaro Domenico,

It is with great sadness that I learnt of Dominic’s passing. Such a very dear life long friend. I ‘am so grateful for all those early years of shared memories in Villa. Little did I know when you went to the USA. I too would follow several years later. I’m forever grateful you introduced me to City College New York. Over the years our paths occasionally crossed in New York, Asia, and Italy. You will be sadly missed. Praying for the comfort and compassion of the Lord for Lucia, Madeleine, and family at this time of profound loss.

February 2, 2026 at 6:24 pmAn exemplary Distinguished Professor of International Economics and Finance. An educator and prolific writer of international acclaim, who inspired his students to be thoughtful and intellectually productive.
I was blessed to be educated by a maestro with virtually unrivaled empathy and sensitivity to the academic wellbeing of all his students. I could only process the passing of an extraordinary scholar with very deep emotions, especially because of the manner in which he created knowledge and touched the academic and social lives of his students.
My deepest condolences to the Salvatore family during this very solemn moment and quiet celebration of a purposeful life. May his memory be a blessing, and may his soul rest in perfect peace.

February 3, 2026 at 7:00 amCaro Dominick,

Alberto e Federica
