Ann Cora Monahan (Cora) 6/23/1932-4/8/2022
A life well lived and a person well loved. Cora left us Friday morning on a wet “Irish” day. How does one describe the impact of someone who touched so many and modeled such an adventurous and can-do approach to life? Cora was born in Dunboyne, Ireland, a small village in county Meath just outside Dublin. In the winter of 1957 at the age of 25, with her husband Gerry and their three small children they moved to The Bronx, leaving all of their extended family behind; a pretty courageous thing to do. They settled in Our Lady of Angels parish and there had three more children. Gerry & Cora were very involved in the parish CYO program where over the years they helped create a basketball, cheerleading and softball dynasty (especially for the girls!). Cora was so dedicated that she once made 40 cheerleading uniforms in record speed, staying up late in the night to have them ready for the annual New York Cheerleading Competition.
Subsequently they moved to Yonkers from The Bronx and carried that same adventurous spirit to their new home, where friends and family were always welcome, especially those from Ireland whose visits were a welcome treat for the whole family. At holidays Gerry and Cora often welcomed strangers to their table. There was always another seat available. Their door was always open. In later years Cora loved spending time with her grandchildren and then her great grandchildren. She wanted to be at all the games, birthday parties and weekend escapades. She was their beloved Grandma and Mima.
She was predeceased by her husband Gerard Monahan Sr. She is survived by her 6 children, Margaret Umbrino, (who is predeceased by her husband Frank,) Eileen Monahan,(Penny Pollard,) Geraldine McManus, (Tommy,) Gerard Monahan Jr, Ann Monahan-Baier, (John,) Brendan Monahan, (Jennifer,) as well as 13grandchildren, Vincent Umbrino, Kelly Paolili, Philip Umbrino, Brendan McManus, Hannah Monahan, Michael Monahan, Elizabeth Umbrino, Elizabeth Monahan-Pospisil, Taylor Lezama, Liam Monahan, Kurt Monahan, Aaron Crockett, Dylan Bair and by 6 great grandchildren.
In Ireland Cora also is survived by her brother-in-law Frank Slattery, her sister-in-law Bernie Kelly and many, many nieces and nephews with whom she happily visited in 2017.

April 14, 2022 at 7:04 pmVery sad to hear the news. As a child I always loved when Uncle Gerard and Aunt Cora came home to Dublin. Wonderful stories and always so well dressed. You have all got wonderful memories of your mother, grand-mother and great grand-mother and those memories will stay with you forever. She’s at peace now with Uncle Gerard and I’m sure they are looking down upon us all with a big smile.
In New Zealand, many Maori people have “Mana”. I guess anyone can have “Mana”. Mana can mean many things but more often than not it means authority, charisma, prestige, integrity, spiritual power and strength. I believe Aunt Cora had Mana.
