William James McLoughlin (Bill), age 83, died after a long illness on Friday, September 6, 2019 at his home in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, surrounded by his loving family and beloved caregivers, Merah and Beth. From his birth in Manhattan, on April 6, 1936, to his death, Bill truly embraced life and always took the opportunity to shower his family and friends with his inimitable charismatic personality, love and extreme generosity as well as the love of all things Irish. He was born in the Inwood section of Manhattan to Thomas and Anne (Hughes) McLoughlin and was the youngest of five children. Bill attended St. Bernard’s Parochial School and graduated from Stepinac high school in White Plains in 1954. He graduated from Fordham University, Bronx NY in 1958 where he studied economics. Bill joined the US Army and rose to the ranks of Lieutenant. He attended Baruch University where he studied for his masters degree. Bill held memberships in the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Knights of Columbus. After marrying his late wife, Carol (Jordan) of New Rochelle, he joined White Plains Urban Renewal corporation where he pioneered the revitalization and extraordinary growth of what is now modern day downtown White Plains. After losing his beloved mother to throat cancer, Bill dedicated his life to cancer research joining Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City as Director of Grants and Contracts. Bill and Carol resided in White Plains later moving to Scarsdale, New York where they raised their loving five children whom he always proclaimed were his greatest blessings. Later, he lived on the upper East Side of New York City and Montauk NY with his second wife, Eileen (O’Keefe) McLoughlin. After Eileen’s death, Bill moved to Tinton Falls, New Jersey in 2017. Left to honor Bill and remember his love are his two loving brothers, John McLoughlin of White Plains; Thom McLoughlin and sister in law, Barbara (Killeen) McLoughlin of Greenwich CT; and Bill’s five children, Kevin McLoughlin of Tuckahoe, NY; Joanie McLoughlin of Middlesex, NJ; Eileen Higgins of Plymouth MA, Thomas J McLoughlin of White Plains and Erin (McLoughlin) Tracy and beloved son-in-law Michael Tracy, Ossining NY; and apple of his eye, his loving granddaughter, Kelsey Higgins of Plymouth MA; and many cousins and beloved nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Ann Boyd of Maryland and Mary McLoughlin of Mt Kisco, NY Bill will be remembered as a force of nature in all he did. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 14th at 10:45 am at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 15 Cedar Street in Bronxville, New York. Private cremation will follow. The family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm on Friday, September 13 at McGrath & Sons Funeral Home in Bronxville. The McLoughlin family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at Grace Hospice, Edison NJ; and the loving and expert care he received at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer centers in New York and Middletown, NJ.

September 20, 2019 at 11:06 amSuch sad news. I worked for Bill at MSKCC for years. I remember many long conversations and helpful mentoring from him. Once he almost literally moved heaven and earth to relocate the department breakroom because he thought I deserved my own office! I also remember a couple of long sessions in his office teaching him PowerPoint or some other technical thing – “Bill, I could just do this for you much more quickly” – but no, he wanted to learn it! He was a thinker with a curious mind and always wanted to try new things. I owe him immensely, and I’m sorry I didn’t keep in touch as I should have. He will be missed – my condolences to the McLoughlins and all who loved him.
