Michael Joseph McGrail, Sr. 92, of Yonkers, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 28, 2014. Born in Ballinamore, County Leitrim, Ireland to the late Michael and Bridget (McCaffrey) Mc Grail. Loving husband of Aline (nee Ambrose) for 65 years, devoted father of nine children: Thomas (Eileen), James (Nancy), Michele (Paul) Gerstemeier, Sean (Karen), Mary (David) Purdy, Michael, Jr. (Michael Kay), Patricia (John) Flynn, Aline and predeceased by his son, Robert Charles, in 1986. Grandfather of 15 and great grandfather of 8. Brother of Kathleen Barkley and Rosaleen Sweeney and the late Mary, Margaret Carney and Marine Sgt. John Patrick McGrail. Uncle and Great Uncle to greater than 85 nieces and nephews. Michael proudly served in the United States Corps of Engineers during WWII in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. Michael was a life member of Local Dock builders/Carpenters Union 1456. Active parishioner of St. Eugene’s since 1954, Sunday usher over 50 years and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. Michael starred in goal for the NY Americans of the American Professional Soccer League and won the 1954 National Open Challenge Cup. Coached thousands of children over 40 years at Henry S Richards Club and became known as the Founding Father of Yonkers Little League Soccer. HSR honored him with the Annual Michael J McGrail Founders Cup Tournament. He was inducted into the Yonkers Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Michael took great pride in being the 2001Grand Marshal of the Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He will always be remembered with a “twinkle in his eyes” and a smile on his face.
