Hassen, Sherene I June 18, 1973 - September 18, 2024

Sherene I. Hassen (June 18th, 1973 – September 18th, 2024)

Born to Helena and Ahmed Hassen, Sherene was raised in the Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village neighborhood of Manhattan and attended the Friends Seminary for her elementary and high school education prior to attending Long Island University for her Undergraduate Degree. Sherene would continue her educational pursuits at Hofstra University and received her Juris Doctor degree in 1998.

Though an only child, it was at Stuyvesant Town where Sherene would meet her life-long best friend, Marsha Cole at the tender age of nine. That sisterhood would carry through Sherene’s entire life. Always the comic, Marsha’s good humor could always be relied upon to result in Sherene exclaiming “Marsha! Shut up!” to uproarious laughter in their regular weekend phone calls.

An administrator at heart, Sherene began her young career with an internship at the United Nations. She would then take her law degree to various legal roles before finally arriving at the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) in March 2005. With the exception of a brief one-year stint at The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in 2014, Sherene would spend her entire City career at ACS.

It was at ACS that Sherene would meet her future husband, Stephen Feger. Their courtship, lovingly instigated by her dear friend and co-worker Jean Shiel, would result in Stephen finally asking Sherene out in 2012, and the two would later marry in October of 2014. Settling into their apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, the two would later move to Mount Vernon, NY in 2016. They would welcome their first and only cat, Biscotti, in 2022.

A self-described homebody, Sherene relished her time at home with her husband spending almost every waking moment planning her next vacation, even while on vacation. Trips to Italy and Ireland and Costa Rica took place in short order. Always with a check-list in hand, family knew that while opinions were welcome, dissent was not. Sherene was in command of all aspects of their vacations (and the family loved every minute of it).

Taken from us too soon, Sherene is survived by her loving husband, Stephen Feger, Mother-In-Law Barbara Feger and Brother-In-Law Andrew Feger.

She is preceded in death by her mother Helena E. Hassen, Grandmother Agnes E. Goffe, and Great Aunt Daphne Abrahams.
