Frank X. Frecentese, Sr. passed away on the morning of Tuesday, May 25th at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY and attended Brooklyn Technical High School, where he studied aeronautical engineering. After graduating, Frank joined the Army Air Force, initially training to be a fighter pilot and, thereafter, he instructed airmen on the proper use of oxygen masks.
As a child, Frank was an altar boy at St. Mary’s on Maujer Street in Williamsburg, an activity that he spoke about often and with great fondness. In his youth, Frank was an avid baseball player, and played catcher on several local teams in Brooklyn. He also enjoyed playing the saxophone and formed a band with his brother, Felix, named after the street on which they grew up: The Frankie Powers Orchestra.
Frank had a successful career of over 50 years in the textile manufacturing industry. Using 100% polyester, he developed a unique weave which was uncharacteristically light and supple. He called the construction “cream puff,” earning him the nickname “The Cream Puff Kid.”
In the 1970s, he became a devoted runner, rising early each weekday to jog several miles before heading to New York City. Watching the tires of a van absorb a bump along one of those runs inspired Frank to invent an adjustable, air-filled running shoe for which he was granted a United States Patent in 1979.
Frank and his wife Adeline raised two children, Tom and Frank, in White Plains, New York, where they lived for 38 years. Frank and Adeline retired to their home in Egremont, Massachusetts in 2005.
Frank is survived by his wife, Adeline, and his two sons, Tom and Frank.
