Raymond Farrelly, of Tuckahoe, formerly of Bronxville, where he was a parishioner of Saint Joseph’s Church, passed away on May 26, 2022.
Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Sheila (Baxter) and his three children Sheila (Ken McGrath), Raymond, and Susan (Lee Gottfried). Also survived by his brother Eugene. Predeceased by his parents, Mary Josephine and Eugene originally from County Cavan, Ireland, and longtime residents of the Bronx, and his brother Francis.
Ray was raised in the Bronx and attended St John’s School in Kingsbridge. He was a graduate of Fordham Preparatory School, Fordham University, and Fordham Law School. He was a lifelong fan of Fordham Rams basketball; he attended many games on campus, often with his wife, Sheila, or his children. When he couldn’t attend in person, he enthusiastically refereed games from the couch. Ray enjoyed golf, gardening, and music. He loved to eat and cook Italian food. Tomatoes were planted on schedule annually, enjoyed profusely, and shared with neighbors—just one example of the generosity he practiced daily.
Perhaps most of all, Ray loved spending time chatting and joking with friends and family. He will be remembered for his quick wit and great storytelling; he loved to laugh and to spread levity.
Ray was a lawyer in private practice for over 25 years before taking a position as law secretary in New York State Supreme Court.
Ray and his wife Sheila enjoyed traveling to Ireland and celebrating the Irish in New York at the Saint Patrick’s Day parade. He was a member of the Cavan P&B Association.
A wake will be held at Fred H. McGrath funeral home in Bronxville on Tuesday, May 31st from 4-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be at Saint Joseph’s Church in Bronxville on Wednesday, June 1st at 10:45 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Fordham Preparatory School.
