In Loving Memory of Gramelia “Gram” DeThomas
June 10, 1934 – May 6, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Gramelia “Gram” DeThomas, age 90, of Bronxville, New York, on May 6, 2025. Surrounded by her loving family, Gram departed after a long and fulfilling life that touched many hearts.
Gram was born in Manhattan, New York, on June 10, 1934, to Spanish immigrant parents, Augusto and Petra DeThomas. She was a proud and devoted daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend who deepened her roots through hard work and a joyful spirit. Following her graduation from high school, Gram dedicated herself to a career as an assistant in the banking and legal industries, serving with diligence and care in various workplaces throughout her professional life until she retired in the early 2000’s.
Her retirement years were enriched by simple pleasures—connecting with cherished friends, caring for beloved children, and spending treasured moments with her family. Though Gram did not have children of her own, she delighted in the company of children and found much joy in nurturing and caring for them.
Gram was a beacon of strength and resilience, having been a two-time cancer survivor, bravely battling both colon and breast cancer. Her unwavering positivity and courage were an inspiration to all who knew her. Every day was a gift to Gram, and she embraced life fully with authenticity and love.
She was known for her infectious laughter, her love of dancing salsa, and her ability to make friends wherever she went. Gram’s warm personality and enduring spirit will be remembered by many. Her friends and family will especially miss her incredible memory of “the good old days,” her delicious arroz con gandules, and above all, the boundless love she held for those around her.
Gram is survived by her devoted sister, Nilda Tierney (John); her niece, Laura Tierney; nephews John (Rosaria) and Dennis (Tara); great-nieces Loren, Julianne, Camryn; and her grand-nephew Landon Tierney. She also leaves behind countless friends, neighbors, and special connections to Nonna Amelia, Carrie & Sarina Neset, who held special places in her heart.
Her legacy of love, strength, joy, and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Though words cannot fully express our sorrow of her loss, we celebrate a life well-lived and a soul that brought light to so many.
In honor of Gramelia DeThomas, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, supporting the ongoing fight against cancer that she bravely faced.
