Margaret Francis Adlerman (née Ilario), a devoted mother, nurse, artist, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, in Montclair, New Jersey. Born on December 3, 1933, in the Bronx, New York, Margaret lived a life defined by compassion, humor, and an unwavering dedication to those she loved.
Margaret’s journey into nursing began at the Fordham School of Nursing, where she earned her degree while balancing work and night school to achieve her master’s in nursing from Hunter College. Her career was marked by a deep commitment to helping others. She began in public outreach before transitioning to hospital work and ultimately found her calling as a teacher of nursing. Margaret took great pride in shaping the next generation of caregivers, including some of her childrens’ friend’s parents.
Family was at the heart of Margaret’s life. She is survived by her daughter Catherine (Jeffrey), her son Edwin (Mary Jo), and her beloved grandchildren Jack, Steven, and Gabriella. She was preceded in death by her parents Victor and Catherine Ilario; her husband Edwin J. Adlerman, MD; her sister Mary and her beloved companion, Sasha. Margaret’s devotion to family extended beyond traditional roles—she was an active participant in the PTA and took charge of school auctions with enthusiasm. Her children’s education was always a top priority.
Margaret found joy in many pursuits throughout her life. She was an avid tennis player who later channeled her energy into painting. She particularly enjoyed capturing the human form in her artwork, often challenging herself with intricate depictions of hands. Gardening and reading also brought her peace and fulfillment.
Her Catholic faith played a central role in her life. Margaret attended daily mass with a close-knit group affectionately known as the “church ladies.” These gatherings were not only spiritual but also social occasions where she shared stories about families and friends.
Known for her kindness and sharp sense of humor, Margaret had an extraordinary ability to uplift those around her—even at personal cost. Her generosity knew no bounds; she was always willing to lend a hand or offer support when needed. Later in life, she embraced new adventures with gusto—whether attending a Rolling Stones concert or enjoying simple pleasures like walking along the beach or sharing hot dogs with her best friend, Mary Leferovich.
Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and selflessness that will be cherished by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those whose lives she touched so deeply.
A wake will be held at Fred H. McGrath & Son, funeral home on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on April 11, 2026, at 9:45 AM at St. Joseph’s Church 15 Cedar Street.
Contributions in her memory can be made to the American Heart Association, the New York Bronx Zoo or Botanical Gardens or The Hunter College School of Nursing.
