Margaret Ann Gaughan died on September 25, 2023 surrounded by her five loving siblings and their spouses. She was born on March 3, 1948, in the Bronx, New York; the first child of the late James J. and the late Agnes (Vetter) Gaughan. Devoted sister of Ellen (William) Porcaro, James (Ann) Gaughan, Agnes (William) McNamara, Joseph (Joanne) Gaughan, and Mary (William) Werner. Beloved aunt of Lauren, Megan, Maggie, Jimmy, Billy, Joey, Kerry, Mikey, Katie, Mark, Johnny, Aggie, Billy, Chris, Heather, Kristine, Danny, Robert, and James; great-aunt to forty-five great-nieces and -nephews whose birthdays she knew by heart. Margie was devoted to her faith, family, and friends and exemplified what it means to live for others. After a happy childhood in Throggs Neck, in the Bronx, she entered the congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion at eighteen, spending fifteen years as a middle-school teacher and director of religious education. Returning to a layperson’s life, she worked for Maryknoll Magazine for thirty-four years, rising from copyeditor, ultimately to editor, and reporting from El Salvador and Appalachia. She was soft-spoken, generous, and convivial in tone, and clear in conviction and compassion in spirit. “Being a missioner means living God’s word by sharing God’s love,” she wrote in 2019. Ever the brilliant editor, she knew: leave in the good, the honest, the pure; put to the side, everything else. We will love and miss her always. Reposing at McGrath Funeral Home, 20 Cedar Street, Bronxville, NY, on Thursday and Friday, 4pm-7pm. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, Our Lady of Good Counsel Chapel, 52 North Broadway, White Plains, NY, 9:15AM. Interment to follow St. Raymond Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
