Owen “Gene” O’Beirne

Gene O’Beirne, born on May 30, 1926 in the Bronx New York. He was the middle child of Irish immigrants, Mary Morrisroe and William O’Beirne from County Roscommon with older brother Billy and younger sister Anne. He attended Pius V Elementary School and Morris High School in the south Bronx. He would play stickball with his friends and learned how to swim by jumping into the East River. He would help is Mother around the house by cleaning windows. When he turner 18,  he enlisted in the Navy at the end of World War II where he saw action in the Pacific. After the war, he worked in the Garment District,  first as a clerk, and then is a salesman. He would  take the subway to work from the Bronx to Manhattan. He met his future wife,  Josephine Kenrick, from the same neighborhood after a friends wedding.  They married in February 13, 1954, shortly after his father died.  They had a daughter,   Joanne a year later and a son William “Billy” in August 1958.  He lived in the Bronx until 1977. When he bought his first house in Mt. Vernon, New York.  It was a big house, able to hold  his extended family of his mother, Mary, his wife, Josephine and his  two children and his younger widowed sister, Anne and her two children, Bobby and Maureen.   He switched careers, when he was 55 and became a Door Man for a building on West 53rd Street next to the Museum of modern Art. He took the Metro North train to work now. His wife died 1987 and he continued to live in the big old house in Mount Vernon with his younger sister, Anne.   He met Joan Murray at his local parish in Mount Vernon in 1994, and dated her until her death in 2010. He enjoyed reading, watching sports on TV, going to the movies and dining at Italian restaurants.  His 80^th birthday party was at Enzo’s in Mamaroneck , NY.  His beloved sister Anne died in May. He is survived by his children, Joanne and Billy, Many, nieces and nephews, his cousins, Theresa, Campbell in New York, Bob Bucklin in St Louis, Missouri and numerous Morrisroe cousins in Roscommon, Ireland and the tri-state area.
