Patrick “Pat” Whelan passed away on August 16, 2021 at 75 years old after a valiant fight against COVID-19. He was born in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, Ireland to the late David and Gertie Whelan and was the third of four children. As a child he lived in Ballyduff Upper and has many happy memories of his time there. Pat emigrated to America in 1972. Pat met his beloved wife Kathleen (née Kelly) of Killarney, Co. Kerry when they lived in the same apartment building in Bedford Park, the Bronx, New York. They were married June 25, 1978, recently celebrating 43 years married, and had two children in Woodlawn, the Bronx, NY. They later moved to Yonkers, NY where Pat loved to barbeque hamburgers and lamb chops to enjoy on the deck he built.
Pat knew how to enjoy life and the things he loved including Golf, playing cards, Irish Music and all things Waterford. Pat was an active member of the Woodlawn Golf Association, a founding member of the Links at Union Vale Golf Course and known to frequent many of NY and Ireland’s best golf courses over the years. He was also an overseas lifetime member of Ballybunion Golf Course. Through his encouragement (and thanks to many miles put in crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge to Pearl River!), his children both played traditional Irish Music. Pat loved arranging trips for groups of musicians to enjoy the sights when they were in Ireland competing in the Fleadh Cheoil. He was a proud Waterford Man who was a long time member, former President and Man of the Year of the County Waterford Association of NY. He carried the Thomas Francis Meagher banner many times on Fifth Avenue at the NYC Saint Patrick’s Day parade. He also sold many Deise Draw tickets over the years – including some big winners! – to support the Waterford GAA Hurling Team.
Pat worked many jobs throughout his life including working on the Alaska Pipeline, owning his own construction business with his late friend Bill O’Brien, and working as a carpenter for the NYPD and New York Housing Authority. As a carpenter with the NYPD, Pat was a 9/11 first responder who spent weeks at Ground Zero as part of the rescue and recovery efforts. He developed and was successfully treated for 9/11 related cancer.
Once Pat retired, he and Kathleen spent their winters at Sterling Village in Boynton Beach, FL enjoying golf, playing 25, dancing and volunteering at the weekly barbeques. Their summers were saved for trips home to counties Waterford and Kerry.
Pat will be sorely missed by his loving wife, Kathleen, children, Maura and Declan, son-in-law Kurt, granddaughters, Maeve and Niamh, brothers, David and Frank, sisters-in-law, Eileen and Maura, brothers-in-law, Mike and Pat, nieces, nephews, godchildren, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Margie.
A wake will be held at McGrath and Sons Funeral home in Bronxville, NY on Wednesday, August 18 from 3 to 7 pm. The funeral mass will be held at Saint Barnabas Church in Woodlawn, the Bronx, NY at 10:45 am on Thursday, August 19. This will be followed by a service and burial in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, Ireland at a future date.
