Americo Charles Volpe, beloved husband of 64 years to Rose Marie Volpe and devoted father of Lorraine Volpe (of Leonia, NJ), Karen Marzitelli (of Madison, CT), and Paula Rowson (of Chantilly, VA), passed away on September 20 at the age of 92 after a valiant battle against cancer. He was very proud of his 8 grandchildren who are all multiples, consisting of one set of twins and two sets of triplets. His grandchildren include Elena Volpe, Rosa Volpe and Danielle Marzitelli, all of New York City; Anthony Marzitelli, of Madison, CT; Christa Marzitelli, of Maui, HI; David Rowson, of Chantilly, VA; Emma Rowson, of Richmond, VA; and Mary-Jean Rowson, of Ithaca, NY. He is also survived by son-in-law, Robert Marzitelli of Madison, CT and future son-in-law Joseph Walker of Alexandria, VA.
On April 6, 1931, as the builders were putting the finishing touches on the Empire State Building in Manhattan, Americo was born to Lorenzo and Paolina (Palmieri) Volpe in Savignano Irpino, Avellino, in the Campagnia region of southern Italy. In 1938 at the age of seven, Americo boarded the Conte di Savoia in Naples with his mother and his sister Ida and sailed to the United States to join his father. He arrived through Ellis Island in what would become his adopted homeland – New York, and later proudly served his new country in the National Guard for over 10 years. His family settled in the Bronx, where he became a life-long Yankees fan.
In 1959, he married Rose Marie Bizzoco at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in New Rochelle. Rose Marie and Americo built a home in Yonkers in which they raised their three daughters. Americo was educated at the School of Art and Design in Manhattan and spent more than thirty years in the publishing industry. He was an assistant art director, an associate art director, an art director and a vice president working for various companies, including Ace Books, Grosset & Dunlap, Parade Publications, and the American Journal of Nursing, all located throughout Manhattan. He was excited to spend some of his career working in the Empire State Building, and was proud when decades later, his granddaughter Danielle began working there as well.
After retiring, Americo enjoyed traveling the world with Rose Marie – journeying to six continents, countless countries, and numerous states, all while toting his camera with him and capturing every moment. He particularly enjoyed his thirteen safaris in Africa, and his family fondly remembers the slide shows he gave upon his return, regaling everyone with tales of his adventures. As the family’s photographer, he always gathered the family for pictures on every holiday and on all the outings and family vacations that were had, including several cruises. His spirit, zest, and passion for life is forever instilled in his family and friends who love and will miss him very much.
The family will greet friends during a visitation at McGrath Funeral Home in Bronxville on Monday September 25th from 4p-8p. Americo will be laid to rest after a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bronxville, NY, on Tuesday September 26th at 10:45a. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne, NY.
