John E. Toffolon Jr. passed away peacefully on April 26, 2022, after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. He was surrounded by his beloved wife of 41 years, Joan, and his beautiful daughters Ashley and Allison.
Born in Hartford, CT to Barbara and John E. Toffolon, he spent his childhood years in Riverton, CT. He graduated from the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business with a B.S. in Finance in 1973, and an M.B.A. in 1977.
John had an outstanding career in investment banking. He worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of NY, The First Boston Corporation as Managing Director and CFO, Nomura Securities International as Executive Managing Director and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cowen Group, Inc., Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Westway Group, Inc., and a member of the NY Stock Exchange Surveillance Committee.
An ardent supporter of education, John gave his time and talents to the institutions he highly valued. He served as Trustee of Fordham University and then a Trustee Fellow. He was a Co-Founder of the Fordham Basketball New Era Fund and a major supporter of Fordham’s student scholarships and men’s and women’s basketball. He also was on the Board of Trustees at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA where his two daughters attended high school. As a resident of Bronxville for 30 years, John was a supporter and champion of many local organizations.
John was an avid golfer, loved the game, and was a member of Siwanoy Country Club, Bronxville, Atlantic Golf Club, Bridgehampton, and Mid Ocean Club, Bermuda. Golf gave him the opportunity to develop close relationships with his colleagues and friends, something that was so important to him.
John lived life to the fullest and made an impact on the many lives he touched. He was a strong, caring, and generous individual, always available to offer counsel to family and friends and his quest for excellence was always apparent. John had many loves, but nothing could compare to his love for his family and his two daughters. He was always there to support them and cherished the moments he spent with them.
He is survived by his wife Joan, his daughters Ashley and Allison, his sister Penley Kidd (Douglas), his cousin Barbara Lee Koones, and many nieces and nephews.

April 29, 2022 at 10:55 amJoan, I am so sorry for your loss. John and I go way back. He was the Best Man at my wedding and though we had lost a close connection over the years, I always counted John as a good friend. I was so pleased to reunite with John and with you at our 50th class reunion in 2019. May God bless you and the girls and help you through this difficult time. Farewell, John. Rest in peace.

April 30, 2022 at 5:44 amJoan you know how Gail and I feel. Anything you or the girls need – anytime anywhere . He was fondly remembered at the Fordham Board of Trustee meeting on Thursday and he was publicly remembered and his contributions acknowledged at the live-streamed press conference for Fordhams new basketball coach on Friday. I have personally received countless calls and e mails asking for details , wanting to know what they could do for you and your girls and remembering John in very emotional ways. He was loved by many, respected by all and maybe feared by a few miscreants. I will miss him in so many ways . You know my ( and Gail ) heart goes out to you , Ashley and Alli. May he Rest In Peace and may God Bless him in a very special way.

May 1, 2022 at 12:43 pmDear Joan,
Tom and I were shocked and heartbroken to learn of John’s passing, and Sam is beside herself with sadness. We were beyond blessed to know John and owe you both a debt of gratitude for the kindness and generosity you showed Sam during her time at Fordham. We were especially grateful for the time we spent with you both after after Sam’s graduation. You will always be family to us, and I hope we have the opportunity to reciprocate your gracious support. Sam and I will attend John’s funeral and hope we get a chance to say hello and give a hug. In the meantime, you and the girls are in our thoughts and prayers.
With all our love and deepest, heartfelt condolences,
Shannon & Tom

A fellow Fordham U. alumni, a truly generous soul, a lover of golf like no other, with a great sense of humor and love of the good life. John was one of my favorite golf partners ever, and a man I looked up to for his business acumen and his infectious enjoyment of life. Although it has been many years, we feel like it was the day before yesterday. Requiesce in pace! Marie and Rick Greene
