Dorothy Isabella Socorro
July 16, 1930 – January 1, 2026
Dorothy Isabella Socorro (née Woodyear) passed into God’s eternal kingdom on New Year’s Day at the age of 95. She was born on July 16, 1930, in New York City to Hilda Paulina (née Corbie) and Hugo Quintin Woodyear, originally of Trinidad. She was the seventh of ten Woodyear children and the second daughter. While the Woodyears may not have had wealth in a material sense, her childhood was marked by the love she would grow and carry throughout her long life. On February 15, 1958, Dorothy married Peter Socorro (1929–1996) of Manhattan. They soon welcomed two daughters and moved to The Bronx, and her life was from then on marked by the love and strength of motherhood. She worked for over 50 years as a secretary and administrative assistant in both the publishing and shipping industries.
Upon her retirement in 1999, she soon found herself faced with what was her most cherished role when her daughter Doreen became pregnant with twins. In the final decades of her life, Dorothy fully embraced her role as grandmother in addition to mother and sister. She cooked good food (especially lasagna), told wonderful stories, and loved with her whole being throughout all of life’s ups and downs. Dorothy was the embodiment of pure, true love and her example of patience and compassion will resound through the generations of the family who she held so dear. Her family will miss her deeply but will find comfort in remembering her wisdom, love, and her two often said phrases: “I love you more” and “Go with God.”
She is survived by her daughters Lorraine Socorro and Doreen Oates, grandchildren Ryan and Cassandra Oates, her son-in-law James Oates, her sisters Paulina Magnetti, Mary Marco, and Delphine Camacho, and several generations of nieces and nephews.
