Heberto Ruiz, of Yonkers, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 7th, 2014. He was 95 years old. He was affectionately known as “Pipo” to all those who had the pleasure to know and love him. He was born on January 26th, 1919, in Cuba, where he married Delfina in 1948 and raised their three children. In 1962, while already well-established in his career and immersed in his community and his Cuban culture, he and his family fled communist tyranny to start life anew in the United States, eventually becoming proud American citizens. As with many immigrant families, their early life in America was a struggle. They ultimately settled in New York City, where the entire family found stability and success with Pipo’s guidance and unwavering support. He is survived by his wife of 65 years and two of their children, Benigna (Dominic) and Herbert (Vicki). His youngest son, Mario (June), predeceased him in 2008. He is also survived by nine grandchildren – Guillermo (Martha), Heberto (Ellen), Diana (Daniel), Alexandra, Amelia, Annabelle, Andrew, Lisa (Eric) and Christine – and seven great-grandchildren – Emma, Evan, Nina, Elijah, Ezra, Luke and Landon. The viewing will be held at Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, located at 20 Cedar Street, in Bronxville, New York on Tuesday, March 11th, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville, located at 15 Cedar Street in Bronxville (directly across the street from the funeral home), on Wednesday, March 12th, at 10:00AM, with interment to follow immediately at The Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York. Pipo’s family is requesting that in lieu of flowers any charitable donations be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
