Murphy, Rita August 31, 1936 - February 14, 2024

Rita Murphy passed away peacefully in Bronxville on February 14, 2024 surrounded by family.  She led a faith-filled life of love, kindness and dedication to family and community.

Rita was born in New York City on August 31, 1936 to Mary Ellen (nee Moyles) and Martin Murphy.  She grew up in Clason Point in the Bronx attending Holy Cross Grammar School in the Bronx and Cathedral High School in Manhattan. Rita continued her studies at St. Vincent’s Nursing School and the College of Mount St. Vincent and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree at St. John’s University, as well as a Masters degree.

Rita’s career in nursing spanned 30 plus years working at St Vincent’s Hospital, Jacobi Medical Center, Lawrence Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center, where she was a Director of Nursing.  Throughout her career Rita’s strong professional ethics and people centric approach made a lasting impression for both patients and colleagues alike.

Rita’s lifelong devotion to caring for others continued after her retirement through involvement with the Ladies of Charity.  A kind woman of unyielding faith, Rita’s gentle demeanor and caring nature touched the hearts of all who knew her.

Rita is pre deceased by her parents and her brothers Harold and Martin Murphy.  She is survived and will be deeply missed by her sisters Irene and Virginia (Bob), sister-in-laws Barbara and Ann, 12 nieces and nephews, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.

To honor and celebrate Rita’s life, a wake will be held at McGrath’s Funeral Home in Bronxville, NY on Tuesday February 20th 3pm to 7pm, and a funeral mass will take place at St Joseph’s Church in Bronxville, NY on February 21st at 10:45am, with burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY
