Bernard “Barney” Joseph McDermott, age 87, of Bronxville, NY passed away on April 18, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Barney was born on October 31, 1929 in the Bronx to the late Martin and Mary (Scullion) McDermott. After attending St. Agnes High School in Manhattan, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. Upon returning, he joined the New York City Police Department before transferring to the New York City Fire Department in 1958. After an early retirement, Barney worked in the real estate division at JP Morgan & Co. before moving into the Building Engineers Union. In 1955 he married Rosaline Dolan. He is survived by Rose and his five children; Laureen (John Coyne), Colleen, Jeanine (Kevin O’Brien), Patrice and Brian (Lorraine) and his twelve grandchildren: Jack, Luke (predeceased), Kieran, Mairead, Aidan, Declan, Aislinn, Lily, Brennan, Fiona, Siena and Emmet. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Martin (Bridget) and a sister, Eileen Jordan. He is predeceased by two brothers, Patrick and Gabriel. He is also survived by many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Barney was a longtime active parishioner and usher at Annunciation Church in Crestwood. He was one the original founders of the Hillcrest Lakers Community Club. In his retirement, he loved spending time at the beach, playing golf and attending his grandchildren’s school and athletic events. He loved his Friday night poker games. Friends are invited to call at the Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home, Bronxville on Friday, April 21st from 5 – 8pm. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22nd at the Church of the Annunciation, Crestwood.
