Father of Kathleen Martyn; and, Thomas Martyn and father-in-law of Cynthia Martyn. Grandfather of Caitlyn, Ashley, Liam, Lauren and Ryan.
Jovial, yet quiet; private; and a true gentleman … that was Tom Martyn. Nevertheless, he enjoyed engaging you in conversation and telling you a story.
Born and raised on Valentine Avenue in the Bronx, Tom graduated from All Hollows High School, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Fordham University, College of Business Administration, in 1959. Tom was a sports fanatic back from his days playing softball and football for the Killarney Rose Marauders. Up until his last days, he and his closest friends would trade stories of the old days at All Hollows, Fordham, and playing for the KR Marauders.
Tom began his tax career at Irving Trust Company. A few years later in 1966, he began what turned out to be a 35-year career at Fiduciary Trust Co. International. He and his long-time friend, Ed Cunningham, were the first few tax professionals to join the tax services team at Fiduciary. Ed later became the Chief Financial Officer of Fiduciary Trust and CEO of Fiduciary Special Services (FSS), the Tax Subsidiary of Fiduciary Trust; and Tom the President of FSS, and Executive Vice President of Fiduciary Trust. Fiduciary Trust was Tom’s family.
Tom retired from Fiduciary in 2000, but to Tom retirement meant continuing to deliver tax services to Fiduciary clients and senior executives. This lasted until the horrible day of September 11, 2001 when Tom was in Tower 2 of the World Trade Center for an early meeting with a friend and former colleague. That day, Tom lost many good friends and experienced things that no one should ever wish on their worst enemies. In his typical fashion, before calling home to inform his children that he was safe, he loaned his cell phone to strangers to call their loved ones. Tom refused to let his son pick him up from wherever he was because he didn’t want to put him in harm’s way. But instead, Tom found his way to a restaurant he frequented, and the owner had a waiter drive him home from Jersey City, NJ to his Bronxville apartment. Like many, Tom was never quite the same after 9/11.
Soon after 9/11, Tom decided to retire for good. He took up a hobby. But again, his life was all about his friends and the relationships he developed at Fiduciary Trust. As expected, his hobby was disguised as a small tax practice allowing him to continue to nurture the relationships he had with family and friends at Fiduciary Trust. This never stopped until November 22, 2014. He treasured the relationships, the visits, the lunches, the conversation, and the laughs.
An avid reader and as mentioned, a sports fan, Tom was a Giants ticket-holder for over 40-years. Through the years he attended with many Marauder pals, including Owen Flynn until the end.
As passionate as Tom was about the Marauders, the Giants, and sports in general, what mattered most to him was his grandchildren and he treasured his time with them – Caitlyn, Ashley, Liam, Lauren and Ryan. In his last years, he couldn’t get around as well as the past, but he was constantly asking about their activities. He wanted to re-live Ashley’s tennis successes, Caitlyn’s track meets, Liam’s baseball and lacrosse games; Lauren’s basketball and soccer games; and of course, Ryan’s favorite Ninja Turtle.
No doubt, Tom will be telling his stories about the Bronx, All Hollows, Fordham, the Marauders, his children and grandchildren as he joins his brother, Patrick, and dear friends, Joe Brady, Ed Cunningham, and other Fiduciary Trust family at the Gate of Heaven.
