Nevart Kuntashian

1926 – 2024

Loving Mother, gracious neighbor, avid gardener, later in life Ms. Nevart Kuntashian could be found most every day in her garden tending to her Irises, her azaleas and lilies.  If ever you saw the azalea bushes in Mom’s garden when they were in bloom in the Spring, you were in for a treat.  When she was not in her garden you might find her at the Crestwood library, or playing bridge at the Bronxville Women’s Club.  She was a member of St. Gregory’s Armenian Church in White Plains NY, where she participated in social activities, was a member of the Women’s Guild, a long-time member of the Cultural Committee, and ran the book sale for many years.

Mrs. Nevart Kuntashian loved to read and play The New York Times crossword puzzle.  Back in the day she graduated from Washington Irving High School in the Bronx, and later she returned to school to get a college degree from Lehman College, also in the Bronx.  Always possessing an eye for beauty, when she was young she worked in the fashion industry, dressing and making-up mannequins, and took a position in Lord and Taylor’s department store on Fifth Avenue in New York City.  Mom herself was an artist, and her creativity was expressed on canvas, in her garden, and in the seemingly effortless style with which she made her house.

Nevart Kuntashian was 98 when she passed away peacefully in her home.  She lived a full, meaningful life in New York, where she bridged the tradition of her ethnic forbears, and her New York identity. She was from a different generation, one familiar with hardship, and one that saw that hardship as an opportunity to overcome. She is predeceased by her loving husband Harry, and survived by her two children Gregory and Lisa, a son-in-law Idan, her sister Alice, her niece Karen and nephew Paul, and cousins Bruno and Vahan Ayanian.

She will be missed dearly.  Our comfort is in the belief that she is with the Lord, and in a better place, a place where she is reunited with Harry, her father Nazar, her mother Mariam, and sister Agnes.

There will be a church service and viewing at 3 pm Sunday, March 17, 2024 at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church at 1131 North Street in White Plains, NY.  A reception will follow on Sunday, and the burial service will commence at 10 am the following day, Monday, March 18th, at the same church in White Plains.  All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church, Project Save, or World Vision – Armenia, in memory of Ms. Nevart Kuntashian.
