John F. Bertles, MD, of Bronxville, on April 6, 2014. Beloved husband of Lila. Loving father of Mark, Jacquelyn and John. Cherished Grandfather of Ian Bertles and Alex and North Vincent. He was Born in Spokane Washington on June 8, 1925 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on a mine sweeper off the coast of California. He graduated from Yale University Class of 1945 and from Harvard Medical School Class of 1952. He specialized in hematology. At the time of his death, he was Professor of Medicine Emeritus For Life at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He had served as Director of Transfusion Services (1981-1995) at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center and Chief of Hematology – Oncology (1962-1995) of the Medical Service at St. Luke’s. At the National Institute of Health, he was on the Hematology Study Section and the Blood Research Review Board (1972-1984). He received a Pioneer Award from the National Sickle Cell Disease Program of the NIH. He was an Attending Physician in the Medical Service from 1962 to 1995 at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Center, Attending Physician 1995 to 1997 at Montefiore and Career Scientist from 1962 to 1975 at the Health Research Council of NYC. His research appears in multiple medical journals and text books. Jack loved his family, traveling and good food and wine. True to his Irish roots he always loved a good story. A funeral service will be held on Saturday April 12th at the funeral home at 12 noon.
