McEntee, Evelyn Ottens July 18, 2025

Evelyn Ottens McEntee died on November 29, 2011. She was born on January 18, 1927 in Easthampton, MA.

She was the youngest daughter of Stanley and Mary (Zapert) Florkowski; sister of Walter, Rhett, Stanley, Nikki and John, all of whom pre-deceased her. The family moved from western Massachusetts to Easthampton on Long Island when she was three, and eventually made their home in Brooklyn, N.Y. Evelyn – known by family and friends as Lyn – attended Bay Ridge High School, and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. In the early 1940’s, she began her career as a model – working for Polaroid among other firms – where she was featured in numerous national magazines. She left modeling to work as an Art Director at Burlington Industries. She also volunteered for the USO, supporting the troops during World War II.This brought her to Cornell University, in upstate N.Y., where she met her future husband, Justin Theordore – Ted – Ottens, who was undergoing officers training for the Navy. They married in 1948 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and had their first child, Randy, in 1949. Ted followed his Father’s career, working as an investment banker at Salomon Brothers. In 1954, as a Junior Partner, he was transferred to the Chicago office, where their children J.T., Jonathan and Megan were born. In 1957 Lyn and Ted returned to N.Y. and made their home in Bronxville. Their youngest child, Duane, was born there in 1958. Lyn was widowed in 1969, and married Charles Stewart McEntee, Director of Van Cleef and Arpels, in 1974, in Bronxville. During her first marriage, Lyn was an active member of the Bronxville Junior League for Service and the Bronxville Women’s Cub. She was always a talented athlete, and loved skiing, tennis and golf. She got her first “hole in one” at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., where she spent a great deal of time playing golf and tennis, dining and dancing, and enjoying the beach with her children. She was also a member of the Bronxville Field Club, and well-known as a gifted tennis player and bowler. Travel was also a big part of her lifestyle, with trips abroad to the UK, Europe, Turkey and Egypt. Many family summers were spent in Gloucester, MA,and Fairfield Ct. Winter ski trips to Lake Placid were also a family tradition. Family gatherings with grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles were also important traditions. Lyn was a generous hostess, always opening her home and heart to family and friends. She always did this with great style and elegance. Her appreciation of fashion and beauty was evident in the way she entertained, dressed and designed her home and garden. She passed her love of beauty on to all of her children, as well as her love of animals. Her faith, and the Catholic Church were very important to her, and grew deeper as she grew older. After a long illness, she died at age 84. She leaves behind her sons, Randy, J.T. and Jon Ottens, her daughter Megan Ottens-Sargent, her grandchildren Ana Sargent, and Elizabeth and Teddy Ottens, her daughter-in-law Elaine Ottens, and her nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her two husbands, Justin T. Ottens and Charles S. McEntee, as well as her youngest son, Duane Ottens.
