Margaret Conniff (née Scally) passed away on the evening of September 8, 2024, at the age of 87, after a long battle with cancer. Margaret was at home at the time and surrounded by her children and devoted husband of 60 years, Tom. Margaret spent her life committed to her faith and family. She graduated as one of four math majors in her class from St. Joseph University in Brooklyn. Although she originally thought she might become an actuary at an insurance company, she quickly found her love in teaching. She had a successful career teaching in parochial schools in her hometown of Brooklyn and adopted home of Westchester for over thirty years, but her true vocation was being a mother and grandmother — a job she excelled at like no one else!
Margaret raised four children and, once they were grown, committed herself full time to being a positive force in the lives of her ten grandchildren. “Gram”, as she was called by almost everyone in her later years, spent countless hours on soccer pitches, lacrosse fields, basketball courts and theaters, always encouraging and supporting each of her grandchildren in all their endeavors. She had a deep faith in God, which gave her great comfort throughout her life and particularly as she battled cancer — a fight she took on with all her strength. The Lord took her home on the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, to whom she was devoted her entire life. In the end, her only regret was that she would not be able to continue enjoying time with her family. But we know her generous spirit will continue to be a force in our lives.
Margaret is survived by her husband Tom, her children Peter (and Cara) Conniff, Christopher (and Susan) Conniff, Ellen (and Roger) Marment and Nancy (and Steu) Marshall, grandchildren Will, Aidan, Peter, Casey, Olivia, Colin, Betsy, Jay, Rachel and Annie. She is also survived by a large extended family, including her brother Raymond Scally and sister Dorothy Forde.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Margaret’s favorite charity, POTS (Part of the Solution), 2759 Webster Avenue, Bronx, NY 10548-3708.
