Jean Barrett Colligan of Yonkers, NY died on November 18, 2019 at age 91. Born in the Bronx to John J. Barrett and Estelle Griffin Barrett, she is predeceased by her husband, Arthur B. Colligan, and brother, John J. Barrett. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Florence Mahoney, her children, Arthur Colligan, Ann McEvily (Patrick), and Mary McShane (Thomas), her grandchildren, Katie Kyne (Brendan), Patrick and Claire McEvily and Thomas and Elizabeth McShane, her great-grandson, James Kyne, and many loving nieces and nephews. Jean was educated by the Ursuline Sisters from kindergarten through college. Jean was Student Body President at both the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula (’46), and the College of New Rochelle (‘50), and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Fordham University. Over the course of her teaching career with the NYC Board of Ed, as an elementary school teacher, librarian, and acting assistant principal, Jean worked to improve the lives of her students in the South Bronx. She shared her love of St. Patrick’s Day with an endearing tradition of organizing bagpipers to lead her students in a parade throughout the surrounding neighborhood annually. Jean served as a lay Ursuline Associate for the past 30 years, working together with the Ursuline Sisters in prayer, support and service. She was an active member of the Ladies of Charity in her parish community. Jean found goodness in every one she met and brought them joy through her friendship. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8pm Friday November 22nd at the Fred H. McGrath Funeral Home, Bronxville, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be at the Church Of AnnunciationFatima, Yonkers, NY at 10am Saturday November 23rd. In lieu of flowers, donations to the care of the retired Ursuline Sisters can be sent in her name to: The Ursuline Sisters, 1338 North Ave., New Rochelle, NY 10804.
