Cleary, Maura E November 11, 1933 - January 25, 2022

Maura Eileen Cleary, 88, of Scarsdale-Yonkers, NY, passed away peacefully on January 25 after a long illness.   Maura was the daughter of Joseph and Kathleen O’Connor, of Roscommon and Kerry, Ireland.   She was the eldest of three, with brothers Edward and John.   Maura loved growing up in the Fordham area of the Bronx and the close extended family she had there in those days.  She graduated from St. Nicholas of Tolentine high school and remained convinced all her life that she could find Tolentine connections almost anywhere she went.  Maura was a ground breaker as a woman and top student at Fordham University in the 1950s.   She continued to blaze a path for women as one of the earliest female public accountants working for “Big Eight” NY firms.

Maura leaves behind her husband of sixty years, Richard Cleary.  Maura was a fabulous mother, totally dedicated to her sons Colin (Susan), Richard (Stacey) and Douglas (Jenn).  Maura somehow found time in the early 1970s to earn her MBA at Fordham and returned to work as a senior accountant.   Maura was a long-time parishioner and Treasurer for Our Lady of Fatima.

Ever social, Maura relished the friendships of family and neighbors.   She loved the beach and found particular delight in Spring Lake NJ.   Maura was especially happy in a circle of friends and family, enjoying the sunset.   Maura could make a friend in a minute.   She relished a good party and was invariably one of the last to leave.   Maura enjoyed foreign travel and was proud of her Irish heritage.

Maura was devoted to her grandchildren Connor, Caitlin, Meridy, Megan, Ryan, Liam and Ava. She leaves them a legacy of love of family and appreciation for friends and community.   Her family will cherish her memory.

Maura was my moms best friend, but she always made us feel like a part of their family. She had the ability to make every time that you saw her feel like a celebration; weddings, Thanksgiving, or just an unannounced visit to the house. Her generosity and kindness are things that everybody should strive for. Although we haven’t seen her recently we think about and talk about Maura often. She will be missed,
    Michael and Tiffany Timoney
