Carl A. Catauro, age 61 passed away after a seven-year battle with kidney cancer surrounded by his family. Carl was born and raised in the Morris Park Section of the Bronx. He was a graduate of Regis High School and received his A.B cum laude from Georgetown University. Upon graduation from Georgetown Carl worked as the Assistant to the President for then Georgetown University President Timothy S. Healy, S.J., functioning as his Chief of Staff. Carl continued his studies, receiving his J.D. from Georgetown University. Upon graduation from the Georgetown University Law Center, Carl worked as a litigation associate at the law firm of Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine. Subsequently, Carl found his true passion as a Special Agent and Legal Advisor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he worked several high-profile cases, (including one featured on American Greed and America’s Most Wanted). Carl also served as a trustee for the FBI Agents Association Memorial College Fund, which provides scholarships to the children and spouses of FBI agents who die while employed at the FBI. Carl retired from the FBI after 21 years of distinguished service and began a new chapter at the MTA Office of the Inspector General, where he rose to the position of Chief of Construction Fraud matters overseeing monitoring, compliance and investigations on the MTA’s construction projects. Carl was known for his intelligence and conscientiousness, but he was most dedicated to his family, faith, and friends. Carl could always be found at his sons’ football, soccer, and basketball games, where he readily volunteered his time. Whether it was attending sporting events with his sons, teaching them how to drive or dispensing advice, Carl was always there for them. In later years Carl enjoyed spending time with his Grandson, Jaxon. Carl was a reliable, caring, and loving friend. Carl is survived by his sons, Christopher (Casey) and Spencer, his grandson Jaxon, his former spouse Stephanie Cappelli, his sister Adrienne Gizzi (Chris), his nieces Ashley Tedone Williamson (Jonathan) and Sophia Gizzi, and his grandnephews Finn and Noel Williamson, as well as many dear friends and cousins. Carl was predeceased by his parents Mario and Dolores Catauro and his sister Lisa Catauro (Marcos Benitez). In addition to his commitment to Jesuit education Carl became dedicated to the mission of the Dominican Friars due to his son’s experience at Providence College. Carl loved to travel and visited six of seven continents. He was particularly passionate about his beloved Italy, in which he studied for a semester and visited many times. Carl was devoted to the practice of his faith and strived to live his life invoking the Jesuit motto “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (For the greater glory of God”). The family wishes to thank Dr. Ritesh Kotecha and Dr. Darren Feldman and the entire staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for the outstanding care Carl received while a patient there. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Regis Highschool, Georgetown University, Providence College, the FBI Agents association Memorial College Fund or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

I worked with him there daily for the last seven years and though he somewhat let on to me the fight he was in you would never know it from his work ethic. Through his last day in the office, he held a very high standard for our work. He spoke often about his Family that he loved. He also spoke often about his many long friendships. We worked closely over a number of years and we became friends over those years. January 1, 2025 at 4:51 pmI was so sad to hear of Carl’s passing. Carl was my roomate at the FBI Academy. I knew from the first day we met in November 1995 that he was a special person. We were part of a small group of New Agent trainees that requested, and was approved, to be assigned to the FBI New York Office (NYO). I was lucky to consider Carl a friend for our 20+ year career. Carl was very well liked and respected in the NYO and he was an accomplished Agent. His friends knew they could go to Carl to get sound advice. He was also very funny. I remember many moments throughout the academy that Carl would come up with one liners that would make us laugh. I still smile when I think of our time in the academy. Throughout our friendship, Carl would often speak about his family and it was clear there was nothing more important to him than his faith and family. I am very fortunate to have known Carl. My prayers and condolences go to his family and friends during this very sad time.

I got to know Carl over the many years I have known Adrienne and the family, since 1982 – Carl was at Georgetown while we were at Iona and Adrienne always spoke so highly of him. He was a kind and intelligent human being, with a witty sense of humor and a hearty laugh. He had a big smile and always made sure to say hello and chat with me when with me when I visited the home on N High Street. He wasn’t the roughhouse kind of brother, but more of a friend to Adrienne and to her friends too. We often spoke about current events and what was exciting on the home front. He helped to raise two productive and kind boys/men and was a smiling grandfather to his little Jaxon. Carl is gone too soon, and it is a sad time for all – but he made beautiful memories with his family and friends that we can all cherish and dream about – I will truly this very special man, brother, father, and friend; Heaven gained an angel on Christmas Day ❤️

I did not see him often other than family occasions, but, I will never forget the ride from NY to Atlantic City and the weekend away that we all had (Adrienne, Chris, etc.). It was so much fun and I was lucky to get the chance to know Carl. When I spoke with him, he was interested and interesting, always cared about what the other person had to say. He was humble and a beautiful soul. Adrienne was lucky to have him as a brother as was he to have her and the family around him. Karen and I always marveled at what a great brother Carl was and what a great relationship he and Adrienne had. He will be missed dearly. I am so sorry.

January 14, 2025 at 10:53 amI was suite mates with Carl at the FBI Academy in 1995. He and Dan Brennan lived next door to Gordan Cobb and myself. Being from a small town in Virginia I had never met someone born and raised in New York, and with such a thick accent. I remember the first day of class some boss came in and asked that anyone who wanted to be assigned to New York could simply raise their hand and it would magically happen. As Carl sat next to me in class, his hand (and about 25 others) immediately went up, and I thought to myself, “these people must be crazy”. However, in retrospect, I don’t think one of those 25 people that day ever left New York. I remember Carl’s smile, and that it would light up a room. I remember Carl’s inquisitive nature, and there was no question that was ever out of bounds as Gordan and I painstakingly explained exactly how a semi-automatic pistol functioned. Carl had an easy going nature, and a quick wit. I loved his sense of humor. While our paths never crossed since the Academy days, I am proud to have served with him, and to have called him my friend. He is gone too soon, but may he rest in eternal peace. My condolences to family and friends. The world has lost a very, very good man.
