Margaret M. Barrett, 94, of Bronxville, formerly of Woodlawn, passed away on June 24, 2019 surrounded by her loving family, including her children and grandchildren. Marge was born in New York City on August 19, 1924, to the late Bernard and Sarah Rogan. She was raised in the South Bronx, the second of seven children. Growing up with her large Irish Catholic family created many wonderful memories. She was a proud graduate of St. Jerome’s Elementary School, Cathedral High School and St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing.
She met her upstairs neighbor, Patrick Barrett at a Knights of Columbus dance, and that was the beginning of a 52-year romantic adventure. She and Pat settled in Woodlawn and raised their five children at St. Barnabas Parish. Their house on E. 236th Street was headquarters for decades of Barrett family holidays and story-telling get togethers with their kids, grandkids, cousins and friends. Marge loved to sew, watch old movies, read, and spend time with her family, especially down the shore in Lavallette, NJ. She never did get her driver’s license.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Patrick J. Barrett and her son, Rev. Brian P. Barrett. Survived by her children and their spouses, Rev. Michael J. Barrett, Aileen (Kevin) Ferrick, Marie (Jim) Clifford, and Teresa (Larry) Hamdan. She was the devoted Mema of Julie (Gerry), James, Patrick (Katie), Kathleen (Ronan), Mary Beth, John, Meaghan, Neal, Brian and Will. Great-grandmother of Anna, Ellie, Patrick and Caroline. Dear sister of Anne Murphy and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, Bronxville, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm Thursday, June 27th. Mass of Christian Burial, St. Joseph’s Church, Bronxville, on Friday, June 28th at 10:45 am. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
