ALLEN – Mary Gertrude Therese, was born in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on August 8, 1917 and died on July 2, 2014. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a BA in English, and taught briefly in Our Lady of Victory school in Mount Vernon before accepting a job with Reader’s Digest. She moved to the Freeport Sulfur Company where she spent the rest of her career, rising to head the Human Resources department; she retired the late 1970s. Although she never married and never had children, she was very much involved with her large extended family, and particularly so with the children of the next generation. All of her nieces and nephews were introduced one at a time to theater matinees by Aunt Mary. An indefatigable world traveller in Europe, Asia, Oceania, North and Central America, and Africa, she travelled in early years with school chums and latterly with her sister, Sister Margaret Mary Allen, RSHM. She lived for nearly 90 years in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon, and was a continuous parishioner of Saints Peter & Paul RC Church on Birch Street from its founding by Cardinal Hayes in an auditorium on Gramatan Avenue in 1929. A devout daily church-goer, she was a generous supporter of many charities, including several religious orders, medical research, Native American charities and others. She moved to St Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry in 2012. She is survived by two sisters, Sister Margaret Mary Allen, RSHM, of Tarrytown, and Frances Rosa Allen Bliss of Valhalla, and by 8 nieces and nephews, 14 great-nieces and great-nephews, 2 great-great nieces and 2 great-great nephews. Visitation will be held at Fred H McGrath & Son, Funeral Home, Bronxville, on Tuesday, July 8, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial at Sts Peter & Paul on Wednesday, July 9 at 10:00 am. Interment will be in the family plot at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Niagara Falls.
