Marion Carbery Lechowicz, Mount Vernon, NY on February 25, 2017. She was born in New York City to the late Michael and Margaret (Galligan) Carbery. Marion attended St. Jerome’s School and the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula in the Bronx. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle (CNR) with a B.A. in Speech-English and taught at the Saint Joseph’s School for the Deaf. After achieving her M.A. from Hunter College in Speech and Hearing Handicapped Education, she taught in the New York City Public Schools in Special Education. Later, she graduated from Fordham University with an advanced degree in Administration, Policy, and Urban Education. Marion became a Special Education Supervisor until her retirement in 1998. She was especially active in the Alumnae Association at CNR and ultimately served on the Board of Trustees for the College receiving the Angela Merici Award and the Ursula Laurus Citation. In addition, Marion was active at her former parish, St. Ursula’s in Mount Vernon, serving in the Folk Choir and Parish Council. She served on the Vicariate Council, South Shore of Westchester, and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. After retirement, Marion enjoyed the company of members of the Manor Club of Pelham and Bronxville Senior Citizens.
In her free time, Marion enjoyed gardening, visiting the Hamptons, shelling on Sanibel Island, FL, and an occasional but always successful visit to the slots. She was an excellent cook and valued family meal time. She could often be found reading the newest novel with a cup of Earl Grey tea. She found tremendous joy in surprising her eight grandchildren with their favorite treat.
She will be missed by her husband Joseph and her children Mary Jo (Steven), Joseph M. (Catherine), and Megan (Andrew). She leaves behind a sister, Geraldine Farrell (John) and eight grandchildren. Marion’s family will receive visitors at Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, 20 Cedar Street, Bronxville, on Wednesday, March 1 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Marion’s life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Catharine’s Church, 25 Second Avenue, Pelham, on Thursday, March 2 at 10 AM.
