Philip Joseph “Bud” Beichert, Jr., 84, of Bronxville, New York, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2015. He was born on October 9, 1930 in Kingston, New York, to the late Philip Joseph, Sr. and Gertrude (Connors) Beichert. He is predeceased by his sister, Gertrude Beichert Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen Donovan Beichert, his sister, Marilyn Beichert Powers and his three loving children, John Joseph and his wife, Patricia, Kathryn Beichert Stillwagon and her husband, Craig, Maryanne Beichert Funai and her husband, Edmund. He was the adored “Pop Pop” of his nine grandchildren.
Mr. Beichert graduated from St. John’s Prep School in Danvers, Massachusetts in 1948. He was recruited to play football by several colleges and chose to attend the University of Rhode Island. He was a two-way star for the URI Rams during his first two years at the school. His college career was interrupted by the Korean War. Bud enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to Service on the USS Bennington. He was awarded a commendation for bravery as a result of his heroism during the May 26, 1954 explosion aboard the Bennington. At the time, it was the worst non wartime disaster in US Armed Forces history.
Following his Navy career, he returned to the University of Rhode Island where he had earned his degree in 1957. Prior to graduating, he married his long time sweetheart, Kathleen Marie Donovan on August 18, 1956. The couple moved to the Westchester County area where Bud embarked on a very successful sales career in the fine paper business. He was a Sales Manager for Olin Matheson Corporation. He was a Regional Sales Manager for the Hammermill Paper Corporation. In 1994, he retired from his business career as the National Sales Manager for the Domtar Paper Company. Since then, he has been an active member of the Bronxville Rotary Club.
Bud was an avid New York Football Giant fan. He was in the stands during the “Greatest Game Ever Played”, the 1958 NFL Championship Game. While he was disappointed in the outcome, it did not tamper his affection for his Giants. Throughout his life, he enjoyed sharing his love of football with his children and his nine grandchildren.
He was an avid tennis player. Bud enjoyed playing during the summer at the Larchmont Shore Club and, in his retirement years, during the Winter at Marco Island, Florida. He always enjoyed competition. He was a competitor until the end.
