Joan Gray Connors of Hartsdale, N.Y., died peacefully in her home on Monday, April 18, 2022. She was born in Manhattan. She was the daughter of Edward Gray and Mary Anne Reilly Gray, and the sister of James Gray and John Gray.
Joan and her beloved husband, Henry Connors, moved to Hartsdale in the mid-1970s. Joan cherished their beautiful apartment, and after Henry died in 2004, Joan continued to live there until passing away at the age of 90.
She was an active member of the parish community of Sacred Heart Church in Hartsdale. In the early 1980s, Joan and Henry commissioned the design and manufacture of a beautiful statue of the “Teaching Christ” that they donated to the parish. The statue occupied a prominent place on the main altar of the Church for decades. After the interior of the Church was redesigned, and with Joan’s permission, the statue now graces the central wall of the choir loft facing the main altar.
Joan was very proud of her Irish heritage, and continued to stay in close contact throughout her life with many of her cousins in Ireland. Her parents were from County Cavan, and Joan enjoyed saying she was a woman loyal to Manhattan and to Hartsdale who benefitted greatly from her strong Irish roots.
Joan worked for many years in the banking industry in New York, starting as a secretary with the Bankers Trust Company of New York and ending her career as a Senior Executive Assistant to the head of the Loan Committee of Deutsche Bank.
Joan grew up and lived on the Upper East Side in Manhattan until she and Henry moved to Hartsdale. According to Joan’s wishes, her funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Friday, April 29, 2022 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, 980 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y. The Mass will be available via livestream on the St. Ignatius Loyola website.
Donations may be made in Joan’s memory to Sacred Heart Church, Hartsdale, N.Y. 10530.
