John P. Murphy of Crestwood NY and Noank CT died peacefully at home on Friday March 13th after a brief illness. Born on June 30, 1927, he was the son of John A. and Isabel Tommins Murphy. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Amy McKay Murphy, his brother Robert, and his five sons John (Betsy) of Eastchester, Brian (Laura) of Bronxville, Paul (Marilyn) of Manhasset, Frank (Emily) of Greenwich and James (Sandy) of Brooksville FL. He also leaves 11 grandchildren- John, Erin, Mollie, Matthew (Gretchen), Billy, Stephen, Anne, Dennis, Gavin, Annie, and Robert. He was predeceased by his brother Frank, his sister Isabel McBride, and his daughter Eileen. John’s life was defined by his love of family, sailing, and summers at his house in Noank. He was an avid sailor and also enjoyed fishing and bird watching. He obtained his pilot’s license at age 16, soloing in a Piper Cub, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps after his high school graduation in 1944.  A graduate of Seton Hall University, he worked on Wall Street for the bulk of his career and took a deep interest in the economy and politics. He was constantly in motion, working on his boats, houses, and designing improvements to his dock in Noank. He was a patriot and a true gentleman. He leaves a legacy of accomplished children and grandchildren. He had a wonderful life and will be missed by all who knew him. Calling hours at the Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home, Bronxville NY, Sunday March 15th between the hours of 3 and 6 pm. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, March 16th, 10:00 am at Annunciation Church, Crestwood. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Jansen Memorial Hospice (www.jansenhospice.org) in recognition of the care and compassion they provided in “Pops” final days.
