Bernice Fecher, age 95 years, passed away in the early morning hours on
Monday, April 29th, at New York State Veterans Home at Montrose.
Bernice was born on November 11, 1928, to Imra Pottok, a Hungarian
immigrant, and his American-born wife, Sophie Gersch. Bernice grew up in
Queens and graduated from John Adams High School in Ozone Park. After
high school, she worked as a stenographer for the NYC Board of
Education.
Through mutual friends, Bernice met her future husband, Brooklyn native
Walter Fecher. The couple wed on on April 11, 1952, and had two
daughters. The Fechers were active in their local parish in Ozone Park,
and lived in Queens for 60 years before moving to Eastchester.
Bernice enjoyed spending time with friends and family in Queens and on
Long Island. She kept up with her favorite cousins (Janice Blumenthal in
California, and Carolyn Gronlund and Diane Craven in upstate NY) by
telephone. She loved television, especially afternoon soaps, talk shows,
and game shows. (Watching Jeopardy! with her mom and daughters was a
family tradition.) She also enjoyed dining out and going to Manhattan to
see Broadway plays and Radio City Music Hall productions.
Bernice is survived by her daughters, Ellen and Louise Fecher, son-in-law
Michael Petro, and her beloved grandson Harrison Petro.
