William Andrew Murray passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2023, at the age of 85. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 29, 1937 to William and Evelyn Murray, originally of Menlough, County Galway, Ireland. With his brother Jim and sister Cay, William grew up in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, where he attended St. Michael’s High School and then went to St. John’s University at its downtown Brooklyn campus where he earned a degree in accounting. Bill was married to his loving wife and partner of 62 years, Pat. His pride and joy were his four children, William (Jeanine), Kevin (Alicia), Carol (John) and Maryanne (Michelle), and his nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. After college, Bill joined an accounting firm, one of whose clients was the New York Mets. In the mid 1960s, Bill joined the Mets front office and became a Vice President, before later moving to the Commissioner’s Office of Major League Baseball in 1979 as Executive Director of Baseball Operations. He retired in 2000, after which he spent much of his spare time lovingly on his grandfatherly duties with his many grandchildren, to whom he was fondly known as “Bubba.” He was a great family man, with great strength and integrity, a hard worker and a rich sense of humor. His family and friends will miss him dearly, but are comforted by knowing Bill’s spirit and memory will live on in each of them.
