Charles Francis McGovern

Born in Glen Farne, Co. Leitrim, Ireland
Charlie McGovern passed away peacefully on October 7, 2022. Charlie was the fourth of nine children born to Thady and Catherine (nee Cullen) and the first of his family born back in Ireland after his parents returned from New York due to the Depression. Charlie and his siblings were raised in Dowra, Co Cavan and he briefly attended the Irish Christian Brothers College in Dublin.
Charlie emigrated from Ireland to New York in 1955, working initially in Manhattan as a New York City Bus driver. He then joined the US Army and spent much of his service in Frankfurt, Germany. After his service, Charlie returned to NYC and the buses. Charlie and his brother Thomas were the long-time owners and operators of McGovern’s Bar on Reade Street off West Broadway in New York. Charlie was also active in real estate and a part owner in other bars, restaurants and a Mr. Softee Ice cream truck in the Tri-State Area.
He is survived by his brothers Thomas and Timothy and sister Kathleen. He was predeceased by older brothers Patrick and John and younger siblings Felix, Annie May and Margaret. Charles never married but was the much-loved uncle to his 18 nieces and nephews, 31 grand-nieces and nephew and 1 great-grandnephew. His nieces and nephews fondly remember Uncle Charlie’s love of pound cake, pets and cars.
A funeral service will be held at 10:45 am on October 12, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Bronxville, NY. Charlie will be buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY next to his brother, John and sister, Annie May.
