July 6, 2020 at 9:58 amDear Aunt Carmen, Jan and Liana, Our condolences to you all. We hope that in the last phase of his life uncle Johannes was spared physical and mental pain and that you all could say goodbye to each other. Er is een Amsterdammer heengegaan. Een trotse Wortel. A global citizen who has made an impressive contribution to this world in an exciting time. What will remain forever for me are the precious memories in Soest-Zuid, Kockengen, Utrecht, New York and Lage Vuursche. Great respect and lots of love for you, a big hug and all of you a lot of strength. R.I.P. Uncle Jan. From my mother, Richard, Ilja, Charlotte, Roos and Britt.

July 7, 2020 at 6:15 pmI am so sorry for your loss, dear Maya and Jan Jr. I send you my deepest condolences and love. Mr. Wortel was a great man and exemplary professional at the UN. He was my first boss in a Professional level post when I joined CEPAL Mexico in 1986. He then kindly invited me to join his team in Nicaragua for the elections of 1989. Years later I worked in his Division when he became a Director in OHRM at UNHQ. His work ethic was admirable and I always looked up to him for inspiration and guidance. He was my role model and I will forever remember him fondly. May his soul find eternal rest and peace, and may God grant you strength and courage to face a future without your beloved husband and father.

July 6, 2020 at 10:54 pmHe was a part of my life since I was a little girl. His voice I still can hear it….just calling me “Hi G”….and his face filled with a caring smile. My father’s best friend, our Tío Jan….you will be so missed.
Memories stay, and these memories will keep you alive in our hearts forever.
We love you, here the whole family…..I love you, and Tia Maya and Jantje.
See you soon ❤️

July 7, 2020 at 3:19 pmDear Maya, Jan Jr. and all the Wortel family,
Daphne and I send you sincere condolences. The untimely passing away of Jan has left us in a state of stunned disbelief. We have shared so many great times together and we hope and pray that the memories and pictures will help you through the days ahead. There is no doubt that a wonderful husband and father has taken his place in Heaven and will be looking over you until such time as you, and we, get to see him again. The world is, for sure, a poorer place with his passing.
In family love and friendship,
Daphne and Tony

July 8, 2020 at 6:20 amDear Carmen, Jan, Liana and all the Wortel family,
My sincerest condolences on behalf of Emily and myself. I will miss uncle Jan for who he always was; A loving husband, father and ‘opa’ and a man to be proud of. I had the pleasure of visiting Jan and Carmen in both Mexico and NYC. He told me numerous stories of his rich and meaningful life, and showed me many places. These memories will stay with me forever.
With love,
Ruud Wortel
