Dorothy Veronica Wargocki passed away on January 6, 2018, in Mount Vernon, NY. She was 86 years old. Born in the Bronx on September 22, 1931 to Walter and Barbara Sherwood, she was the second of four children. She attended Walton High School and married Chester A. Wargocki on September 24, 1949. They were married close to 63 years until his passing in 2012. Together, they raised their family in the Bronx and in Crestwood, NY.

Dorothy was a resourceful, hardworking woman, eager to do what it took to help her family make ends meet. She taught at The Lavelle School For The Blind in the Bronx, held part-time work at the Edenwald Bakery, sold Tara Jewelry, and was a sales manager for Stanley Home Products.

In 1968, she began her career with Metropolitan Life Insurance. After qualifying for the Gun Hill District’s President’s Conference in 1970, she proved that insurance sales wasn’t only a man’s world. Dorothy went on to achieve numerous sales awards during her tenure and became the first woman Branch Manager of the Met Life Manhattan Branch.

Affectionately known as Dotty, she will be remembered by her family, friends, and neighbors for her cheerful, positive attitude and generous, faith-filled, caring spirit. She loved being a grandmother, bringing family and friends together, and would burn the midnight oil preparing for large holiday gatherings of homemade fare. In 2011, Dorothy moved to Sunrise Assisted Living in Mount Vernon where she was cared for until her passing

She is survived by her four children, Christopher Wargocki and wife Patricia of Weekie Wachee, Florida, Chester Wargocki and wife Maxime of Jersey City, NJ, Karen Amendola and husband Frank of Ridgefield, CT, and Regina Guadagnolo and husband Michael of White Plains, NY. Along with her seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, brother Walter Sherwood and sister Barbara Durante of Long Island, and numerous nieces and nephews, she will be dearly missed.

Viewing services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2-4 and 7-9 at Fred McGrath and Son Funeral Home, 20 Cedar St. Bronxville, NY. Funeral Mass is Wednesday, January 10, 10AM at Annunciation / Fatima Church, 470 Westchester Avenue, Crestwood, Yonkers, NY. Burial to follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx.
