Slingerland, Richard C., Sr. August 22, 1931 - August 2, 2022

Richard Carroll Slingerland Sr. beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the age of 90.  He was born August 22, 1931 in Yonkers, NY, to Lewis and Velma Slingerland, and he had four siblings – Donald, David, Doris and Ellen.  David and Ellen are previously deceased. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1956 with a degree in Architecture.  He served in the US Army from 1956 through 1958.  After completing his military service he went to work for William Pahlmann Associates in New York City where he met and married the love of his life  Lorraine Marie Cobosco (d. 2018). Richard’s strong Catholic faith was evident in everything that he did.  Richard later worked at the family firm of Slingerland, Booss and Fakas Architects, Kavy and Kavovitt Architects, Berger Woo-Bo Architects, and Ammann & Whitney Architects as Chief Architect until his retirement at age 80, although he continued to practice independently as an architect for another 10 years, completing more than 60 years as a licensed architect. A past president of the Armour Villa Neighbor’s Association in Yonkers, NY, the group helped preserve the names and history of some of the historic homes in the area.  He is survived by his loving children, Mary of Newtown, CT, Richard Jr. and his wife Amy of Ossining, NY, Catherine Chomiak and her husband Peter of Ridgefield, CT and Christina of Yonkers, NY and three grandchildren, Teddy and Ella Chomiak of Ridgefield, CT and Isabel Slingerland of Tarrytown, NY. Calling hours at The Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home at 20 Cedar Street, Bronxville, NY, from the hours of 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2022.  Funeral will be held at the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 15 Cedar Street, Bronxville, NY on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at 10:45 am, with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.  In lieu of flowers donations to Green Chimneys, 400 Doansburg Rd., Box 719, Brewster, NY 10509-0719 are welcomed in Richard’s memory.

    Will miss Richard who was the husband of my cousin Lorraine. Had many pleasant and informative conversations with him when I visited. We were the same age. My condolences to his wonderful children and grandchildren and other members of his family.
