Romano, Catherine E. August 14, 1956 - August 30, 2023

Catherine Romano passed away peacefully with family by her side on August 30, 2023. Born to Margaret and Thomas Moyik, Cathy was raised in the Bronx, N.Y. where she graduated from Mother Butler Memorial High School.

Cathy joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the age of 17, the beginning of an accomplished career that spanned an incredible 49 years. As an Environmental Protection Specialist for the Superfund Program, Cathy was passionate and dedicated to her profession. She was perhaps proudest to serve on the Agency’s New York City Response and Recovery Operations Team to assist with residential clean-up in Lower Manhattan in the wake of the September 11th attacks.

Cathy was happiest taking care of her home and playing host for holidays and gatherings throughout the years. She and her husband Joe were inseparable, loving partners, and she was a true source of strength and support for family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Joseph Jr., brother Bruce (Dorothy), sister Maureen and sister Mary (Michael), along with sisters-in-law Bea (Bruce), Christine, Carol and Elisabeth, 10 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews.

Joe and Family: Angela and I were deeply saddened by the news. Both of us wish you and family peace, strength and endurance during this difficult time. We both send our condolences.

I am grateful to have known Cathy for many years at EPA as a professional colleague and friend. She was a delightful person to spend time with with many moments both on projects we shared over the years and also though exchanges we had over the years, especially sharing stories about our experiences in life and other family-related stories. She was both joyful and a person of strong character and will. She remains inspirational. She will be missed.

Joe and Romano family, My sincere and heartfelt condolences to you and your family for your loss. Our prayers and love are with you! I met Cathy in January 1995 and cherished her wise guidance ever since. I remember starting at EPA and meeting Cathy for the first time, and knowing right away how lucky I was of meeting one of the best colleague and mentor anyone could ever have. Cathy was tough in a good way and always strived to instill in “us newbies” a sense of professionalism, and dedication in everything we did and to always do right by others. I was amazed by her warm and kind heart and for Your love for the many rescued cats you brought into your lives. I will miss talking with Cathy about the many stories and sports my kids played (big HS football and baseball fan) and how they were doing and of course about the NY Yankees. She will always be remembered and may her soul rest in peace in the Grace of God! Ilde, Claudia, Jennifer, and Emilio.
