McGowan, Mary Jane March 16, 1947 - October 17, 2020

Mary Jane McGowan, 73, died at her home following her third battle with Breast Cancer. Born March 16, 1947 in the Bronx, she married James “Jimmy” McGowan (d. 2006) in October 1970 and raised her family of four in Bronxville, NY.

Mary Jane had a long career in early childhood education, teaching pre-K and other grades for 22 years in the Yonkers Public School system.

She was a dedicated and loving mother who found further joy in taking on the role of “Granny” to her 5 grandchildren. She treasured her family and embraced every moment – the good and the bad – spent with them.

Mary Jane was a true example of a strong woman. She lived her life on her terms – working tirelessly to support her family and while making sure that they had all the extras such as ski vacations and summers at Castle Hill Beach Club. Never one to sit still, when not working you could always find her out and about on an adventure – whether it was at the beach, a Broadway play, a concert or travelling any place where she could be doing something she enjoyed.

She leaves behind her four children (Patrick, James, Sean and Tara) and her beloved grandchildren. In addition, she leaves behind countless stories and memories that will ensure that she remains in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be at McGrath’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 21 from 2pm – 4pm and 7pm – 9pm. A Funeral Mass  of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville on Thursday, October 22 at 9:45am.

“Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand” – an Irish Blessing

In Lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in the name of Mary Jane McGowan to the Breast Cancer Foundation of your choosing.
