Mangano, Katherine Janet March 29, 2024

Mass:  11:00 am, Monday, September 25, 2017, St. Francis of Assisi Chapel at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY

Mrs. Katherine Janet Mangano, of Tuckahoe, NY, passed away peacefully, into her new life on September 21, 2017. She was Born February 2, 1923 in Windsor Locks, Ct. , she lived a full and rich life and to the end and was mentally sharp and inquisitive as ever. Just the day before she died she told her family, “God is calling me and I am ready”. Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles Mangano, who passed in 2010. They were married in 1947. She was the last of 10 children of Dominicilla and Francesco DeBella. Kay was a lifelong nurse, educated at the Mt. Vernon Hospital, Teachers College of Columbia University and Iona College. She was “right hand woman” of Dr. A.F. Angello, a surgeon in Mt. Vernon, NY for nearly 30 years. She then spent more than 20 years in student health at Sarah Lawrence College and Concordia College.

She is survived by a daughter Marilyn Mangano, who has devoted her 13 years of retirement to the care of her parents; and a son, Charles A. Mangano, Jr., MD, wife Elizabeth, of Raleigh, NC, grandchildren, Peter Mangano, of Portland, OR and Katie Mangano of NYC. Katherine has followed their careers closely and never hesitated to offer timely advice. Come Spring one would find her small but productive gardens with herbs and vegetables. Her family members were the beneficiaries of her culinary talents with lasagna, eggplant parmesan and Pizelles as her specialties. She enjoyed her time with Friends of the Eastchester Library and swimming at Lake Isle Country Club. She was also a member of Immaculate Conception Parish for 60 years. She loved to dabble in the stock market, recently consulting with Peter and Katie about Facebook and Twitter for example. Katherine lived a long life of 94 years on her terms and with a keen sense of what was right. She instilled in her family the value of life-long learning, doing your best and striving for excellence in all endeavors. A private family service will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Chapel at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
