Mallon, James J. “Jimmy” September 27, 1934 - August 18, 2020

Jimmy was born on September 27, 1934 in Bronx, NY to Katherine (Olphert) and John Mallon. He was the youngest of 9 children including Anna, Peggy, Billy, Gene, Jack, George, Edwin and Bobby. He is survived by his wife Jodi, son Rodney, daughter Kim, her husband Mike, their children Joseph, Jackie & Anthony, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces & nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was a retired Mutual Clerk at the New York Racing Association and a former Groundskeeper at Shea Stadium (during the 1960’s when the Mets won the World Series, the Jets won the Superbowl and the Beatles first toured America), although Jimmy is a diehard Yankees, Giants and Notre Dame fan. Jimmy also known as “Pops” enjoyed being a full time grandfather and caregiver. He had a childlike trust in God and was a best friend to everyone. He loved telling jokes and stories, playing with his pets (too many to mention) and teaching his grandchildren and their friends how to play cards and sports. He appreciated the great love and care he received from his wife and son and took an active role in helping his daughter and son in-law raise their kids. He suffered from nearly every health complication imaginable, yet kept fighting and never complained or drew attention to himself (ever). Jimmy was ready to help everyone and anyone who needed help and never wanted any credit for doing so. He loved God, his country and his family.

He naturally found a way to brighten up and bring joy to any environment. He will be missed and his memory will be cherished. Love you, Jimmy. Until we all meet again – “see ya ’round like a donut!”

Pops was young at heart, warm, kind, tough and sharp. He brightened up any room he was in and could talk to anyone. I’ll never forget his one liners, stories and jokes but mostly the love he had for his family especially his grand kids who he kept up with til the end! Thanks Pops for always making me and eventually Nev, Charlie and lady feel like part of the family. We will never forget Jimmy. May he rest in peace until we meet again.

I was lucky enough to have met Pops at 18 months old. From that moment he has always been like a 3rd grandfather to me and my sister. We were lucky enough to have him in our lives even if it was only for a short time. You taught me so much from card games, funny jokes, sports stats, and that Walters hot dogs are truly the best.. I will love and miss you forever. ~Will

Jodi, Rodney, Kim, Mike, Joe, Jackie, Anthony, Mallon family, and relatives,
There’s just something about Jimmy. I think of Jimmy as the Pied Piper, and we all followed, patiently waiting for him to say anything and everything! He commanded a room with little to no effort-may we all be so lucky. I know his spirit and magic will live on in all of us who were blessed to be in his presence.
    We love you Jimmy!

Rest easy Uncle Jimmy. You were one of a kind and a true NY kid. I say kid because you would always tell us stories of the old Bronx of your youth. Claiming Fordham. Climbing up the roof of the corner Walgreens to sneak into the movie theater windows. Raising Mallon hell across NY. Along with your brothers, keeping a protective eye for your sisters and nieces so they could walk the streets night or day in complete confidence of their safety. Those stories were larger than life, just like yourself.
You raised a great family and legacy and they will do you proud.
We’re going to miss you. I’ll think of you often and remember that wry smile of my uncle Jimmy Mallon, a true NY kid.

I knew Pops as the bright eyed, easy smiling and laughing, generous, always helping however he could Grandfather next door. His energy always delighted me, and the source of love and support he provided for his family was and still is visceral and undeniable. Through this pain I bless this beautiful family, in deep gratitude for witnessing such love. It is an inspiration and Pop’s spirit stays close to us all, as his love was and is so true and strong.

I have so many fond memories of Uncle Jimmy- too many to list. One that I will always remember is at family gatherings he would grab a pencil and paper and show us a number trick or riddle or whatever you call it. I was always amazed. When I had my own children he would show them. You will be greatly missed. You are now with my dad and your other brothers and sisters.

So much has been said regarding Jimmy’s interaction with those he came in contact with. It was truly a gift he had and he shared it with everyone. His bright and caring attitude helped him even in those last final days . Through it all he took the time to text us his “secret solution” to growing a prize winning lawn. I’m sworn to secrecy. We’ll meet again dear Jimmy. Pat says for you to say “Hi” to “The Big Guy.” We love you, miss you and we will always keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
