Jang Kyu Kim (김장규) passed away on April 3, 2021 at New York-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital after hospitalization complications following a stroke. He was 81 years old.
Mr. Kim, as he was most often called, was born on October 25, 1939 and grew up in South Korea with 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He had a pioneering spirit and an interest in many hobbies, most notably reading and collecting antiques. He majored in English Literature at Kyung Hee University (경희대학교). After working in Montréal, Canada at a trading firm, he was determined to come to America and pursue the “American dream”.
After marrying in 1973, he emigrated in 1974 and lived in Queens, New York and Fort Lee, New Jersey, and eventually settled in Bronxville, New York in Westchester County where he lived since 1981.
Mr. Kim was a fixture on the Metro-North train, commuting to his export / import consulting firm at the landmark Woolworth building in downtown Manhattan. Living in Bronxville and commuting was all part of this dream as he loved being close to and everything New York City had to offer. He appreciated the architecture, loved visiting art museums, and dining out – most notably going to Chinatown and enjoying Italian cuisine on Arthur Avenue. All this while being able to raise his children in a comfortable and idyllic suburban setting.
Also, as part of the immigrant experience and upon his arrival, Mr. Kim had become a part of the community at the Korean Catholic Apostolate of the Archdiocese of New York. He was finally Baptized and Confirmed in 2003 and with the Catholic name, Louis. Through the years, he helped other immigrants and befriended other parishioners led by Father Cornelius Chang.
Mr. Kim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shin Ja (엄신자) / Bernadette and loving children, Justin (김연백) and Cynthia (김윤경) of New York. In South Korea, he is survived by his brothers, Phil Kyu (김필규) and Woo Kyu (김우규) and sisters, Young Ja (김영자) and Ki-Ok (김기옥), and countless nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, Suk Hyun (김석현) and Young Soon (박영순), and brother, Hyung Kyu (김형규).
In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions be made to The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national organization which protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans, so that others can share in the American Dream. https://www.aaldef.org/
